    1. I thought that too. Elton wasn’t anywhere near the scene then. However, maybe the song had meaning. What’s the title of the song?

  1. Thank you for seeing some small potential in Joel. I loved this show so much that I’ve read every review I can find just to relive the joy but everyone seems to see Joel as a sniveling coward.

Yeah, what Joel did was terrible but everyone here is on a path to self awareness. Midge was hiding herself with make-up and brisket. How could she go to such extremes to never let her husband see her without make-up? Her disheveled appearance as she shoved him out the window was growth. And Joel didn’t want the fancy apartment or the job his father shoved him into–he wanted to be a freer spirit–but he took on those things for Midge. Joel has to figure out who he is so he can stop blaming Midge for his shortcomings and punishing her with his affairs and abandonment–or at least recognize that he’s really trying to escape from himself. Rose? She used to eat, for heaven’s sake! Midge needs to trust her mother enough to be honest with her, just as she needed to trust her husband. As anal-retentive as Abe is, he actually seems to be fairly resilient. He knows change is part of the mathematical equation of life and he loves his daughter whether she’s a dutiful wife or a working girl with an arrest record. Love is love.

It will be interesting to see which direction the series goes in season two. I suspect Joel’s sad little “she’s good” was another shove through the window enabling him to see both Midge and himself a bit more clearly. Will he be strong enough to escape the expectations of the times and his parents as Midge is doing? Will he become worthy of Midge? Will Midge stop hiding her real self from her husband and her parents? Can we all just learn to be our own marvelous selves?

    1. I think Joel will do just fine because he loves how different Midge is compared to other women. The issue I think he’ll have is adjusting to the idea of being the man of the house, but him perhaps being in the shadow of his wife.

But, considering his business skills, maybe he and Susie may butt heads over how to handle Midge’s career. Which will likely cause issues for Midge for the more her family knows about her act, the harder it will be for her to come up with material.
