With a trip to Palm Springs, gifted by her dad, Leigh decides to get away from it all. Perhaps even begin the process of fully moving on.

You Made Me Love You: Tripp, Leigh
With that Danny moment haunting her, the last thing Leigh wants is to face him. So, with learning her dad and stepmom set her up for a romance package at the Palm Springs, before Matt died, she takes a mini-vacation. One which is a little hard at first, but then comes Tripp. He is this nice guy, owner of the hotel in fact, who allows Leigh to escape from her life.

In fact, he allows her to test the waters in moving on. She allows herself to be wooed, kissed, laugh, smile, and have sex for the first time since Matt’s death. Yet, despite him being divorced, her being a widow, it seems that one night will be just one night.
Commentary
I feel like there are layers to this. The first being the need to be someone else. Be it that Leigh feels forever haunted by Matt, or felt the only way to truly begin moving on was assuming a role, that is what she did. Then with the Tripp thing, I think for the first time in a long time she was willing to open up to a strange. That is, open up without hoops, obstacles, or a test of any kind. Instead, just enjoying someone’s company, going with the flow, and letting go the need to question, fix, or have some sense of control.
Then came the intimacy. While it isn’t clear how many people Leigh has been with before Matt, and what they may have meant to her, you cannot take away the fact she and Matt didn’t break up. He may have given up on life but that doesn’t necessarily mean he gave up on her. So with having sex with Tripp, like letting him romance her, it seemed to be a test to see if she could not only do those things again, but enjoy it without guilt. Maybe without Matt popping into her head and making it seem his body left but he’ll forever haunt her.

Which didn’t happen at all. She did remember the good times, and sex, they had at the hotel, but it seemingly didn’t have the same weight. It was a memory, a bittersweet one, but that’s it. Thus not giving Leigh closure but definitely the knowledge that when she is fully ready, she can be wholly herself and perhaps love again. Be it loving Danny or someone else completely. Matt wasn’t an anomaly.
Highlights
- Watching Leigh let go and truly just enjoy another person’s company. Especially when they respectively approach her. Seemingly with no intention beyond enjoying her company as long as they have the privilege to do so.
