Ozzie’s case gets put on the back burner as Jax’s relationship with her parents is explored, both when she was six and in modern times.

Back When Jax Was 6: Eddie, Jax, Lu

If you ever wondered why Lewis was so vehemently against Eddie, we learn why by seeing 6-year-old Jax in the final weeks before Eddie initially went away. From how he yelled, how many times Jax saw him do drugs, even copying him with her friends, doing lines of candy at the jungle gym, it was a lot. Of course, Lu was there for it all and has a bit more of a vivid memory, which includes how Eddie would react when he didn’t get his drugs.

In fact, one of the major reasons Eddie was removed from Jax’s life, by Lu, was Eddie overdosing after he tricked Jax into letting him into Lu’s apartment. Lu discovers him on the floor, with Jax in the doorway, seeing her dad on the ground, with a needle hanging out of his arm. Yet, despite the trauma, Lu tried to keep things between Jax and Eddie from being completely severed by pretending Eddie left his guitar pick for Jax, though he reveals he didn’t, and Lu just gave Jax that to make her feel better.

Stage 2C: Mama Lu, Jax, Eddie, Sally, Bill, Stephen

Jax learning from Eddie that her mom has cancer doesn’t sit well with her. Add on, he has power of attorney, and how much power and sway she (Lu) is giving to everyone but Jax, she starts to spiral. In fact, as much as she likes practicing law, and Bill is showing himself to be a good second chair, she asks of him and the courts for a motion of continuance, which appears to be granted.

However, while Bill is sympathetic, Stephen isn’t, for this case is a big deal case that could influence the firm being sold, and he wants it over sooner rather than later. This leads to the first real showing that Bill isn’t down with the BS completely as he pushes back.

Though what also may help Bill is that his and Sally’s situation is revealed to Jax, and it is better for her to learn now than hear it through a third party. But, with all that said, Lu gets a surgery that goes successfully, and while Jax wishes she had gotten a second opinion beforehand, she at least got Lu to agree to stay with her during her recovery.

Reasonable Doubt: Kristin, Krystal, Daniel, Jax, Alex

Daniel sleeping with Kristin is known by Krystal, and she makes it clear, Jax better be told what’s happening, vs. finding out on her own. But Daniel is trying to play up his thing with Kristin as a means to help Jax without her having to be aware of all the ins and outs.

Thing is, as Daniel uses Kristin’s phone to check her messages, add himself her map app to see where she is, and he gets a bit stalkery, he comes to the point of realizing she may not be the woman he knows, or many saw on the stand.

The way it is presented, Alex somehow ended up in the hospital after he was supposed to meet Daniel about that Wendy video we saw a clip of in the last episode. Kristin visited him, lied about it to Daniel, and the next thing we know, as Jax is celebrating her mom coming out of surgery alive, she and Daniel see nurses rush to Alex’s room as he is dying.

Highlights

Seeing Jax’s Childhood Helps Put Things Into Perspective [85/100]

Reasonable Doubt, once a season at this point, delves into Jax’s past in a meaningful way, sometimes even, like in this episode, presenting a different actress to take on Jax’s story. To me, there is something about comparing the Jax we know now, someone who has a strong need for control, desire to be right, and thrives in situations that many will find stressful, compared to her six-year-old self.

In a lot of ways, it helps establish who she is, her vulnerability, her humanity, more than seeing her fail, break down as she did this episode, or even find herself forced to admit she was wrong and apologize. At times, even as human as those moments are, it doesn’t always feel like you are peeking behind the curtain and seeing a character for who they are, but rather getting a reminder that they aren’t some supernatural force.

That’s why seeing a truly vulnerable, younger Jax feels so necessary and noteworthy. Seeing her as a six-year-old exposed to seeing her father, who she was enamored by, nearly overdosing with a needle in his arm, is a major thing. At one point, drug use becoming normalized to the point that she was sniffing some kind of candy off a pocket mirror, introducing that to her friends, which is the type of thing you don’t often see, even when characters boast they came from nothing, the hood, or had a challenging upbringing.

To me, it just continues to show that Reasonable Doubt doesn’t want to have Jax be performative, be it in her Blackness, being a girl who became a woman, or anything which is part of her definition. The show wants to make clear that nothing about Jax started as soon as you joined her story; there is a wealth of moments, people, and decisions that made her who she is, as shown by her career pivot after Damon.

But, most of all, I think the point might be for you to understand Jax may often have a hero’s story, in terms of being this superwoman to many, who falters and then comes back stronger. However, her goal is more so to be her own hero, the one she needed, far more than to be that for any client we see her serve for a season.

How Shanelle Is Being Handled [83/100]

I’m still adjusting to the idea of Shanelle playing such a huge role in the last season, an entire murder case, and now she has a normal life, and pops in and out of Jax’s storyline with ease. It’s hard to wrap my mind around, and while I do wish we got a follow-up, especially considering how Shanelle’s mother-in-law was acting, I’m honestly cool with how she has been relegated.

It doesn’t feel like Shanelle was watered down due to her performance and impact, but like we should see each member of Jax’s circle, they have a full life and always potentially have a lot going on. We may not always become privy to it, but that doesn’t mean their lives start and stop when Jax is around or not.

What Did Kristin Do? [82/100]

To be honest, it still feels like Ozzie’s case isn’t living up to what it initially seemed capable of. But, I have to admit, as new potential killers are presented, and we see what Ozzie’s inner circle is willing to do, there is some level of intrigue that remains there. This episode showed that Reasonable Doubt may not need its case of the season to thrive, but I do think what Daniel believes he has discovered does make it so, with three episodes left, it makes the idea of a big reveal still enticing.

Granted, who knows if it might be related to whatever reason Jax was wailing at the start of the season, but you never know.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [83/100]

Having an episode focused on Jax and downplaying a lot of the B-storylines felt needed and necessary. In refocusing on the person, not her work, not the drama within her circle, it reminds you of who and what the initial hook of Reasonable Doubt is, and despite the goal of expanding beyond Jax, making this feel slightly more like an ensemble, it is never forgotten who is the anchor of this program.
