A Case of Mistaken Identity: Raven, Tess, Mitch, Nia, Booker, Uncle Mike, Richard

It seems the owners from episode 3, the Jablonskis, have sold the building to Richard and his son Mitch. Which brings some hope for the kids and a little bit of fear for Raven. The kids think now recycling bins, better wifi, and better hot water may come and Raven now has to fear her paying rent late may cause issues. Which maybe are just because Richard seemingly plans to live in the building but let 12-year-old Mitch do the managing – and he is a little so-and-so.

I’m talking him outright rejecting the request and because he feels Raven and her family embarrassed him? He takes away their laundry room privileges – which ends up being Chelsea and Levi’s story. Something not worth mentioning since that is the hijinks portion of the episode. What is worth talking about is someone tagging a dumpster with “Butt” which is what got Raven and co. in trouble.

Now, the reason this is something worth noting is because Raven instantly thinks Tess did it. After all, compared to her kids, Tess is, well, less cultured? Less coddled? Plain and simple, Tess is kind of ghetto. Which, alongside always being in her house, eating stuff, and being a bit of a smart aleck, is part of the reason Raven never liked Tess. Especially since she sees Nia as this independent and innocent child. Come to find out though, Nia was the one who tagged “Butt” on a dumpster. Thus coercing Raven to apologize. Especially after hearing Tess being willing to take the fall for Nia, alongside her talking about Raven’s apartment like home.

Commentary

Tess, after Raven apologizes, says that her home is kind of like her home.
Tess: It’s kinda like home.

Tess is such an anomaly. Primarily because, everything said about her home makes it sound like it is a hot ghetto mess yet her uncle is a cop. A well put together cop. So has she been exaggerating all this time? Maybe making an excuse because, perhaps, no one is home most of the time and she is taking care of herself? I mean, this mystery of Tess’ home only gets bigger and bigger and I do hope it gets solved.

With that said, how bougie is Raven? Just because Tess dress a little urban, compared to her Hollister wearing kids, is supposed to mean she is bad? Maybe half the reason Raven can’t keep up with the rent is not just Chelsea not having a job but she can’t budget worth a damn. Because, from what it seems, Raven isn’t designing her kids clothes and while I’m sure Devon helps, and with the job he has I’m sure he provides a nice piece, apparently Raven is doing something wrong here. So for her to be judging Tess and her people, when apparently she barely knows them, is a damn shame.

Question(s) Left Unanswered

  1. Did Uncle Mike teach Tess how to use a lockpick?
  2. Outside of for comedy reasons, why would Booker be put in jail with Raven?
  3. Where does Raven and her family get all these getups for their hijinks?

Highlights

  1. Raven’s bias and bougieness being put on display.

Low Points

  1. Chelsea still is acting like a bumbling idiot.

On The Fence

  1. While meeting Uncle Mike was a nice peek behind the curtain, it also makes the anticipation to see what it is like in Tess’ physical home heighten.
