Lover’s Scorn?: Trevor, Trevor’s Partner
It is revealed that Trevor’s partner/ lover is the one who likely killed him. If not, at the very least, is the one who is going to chop up his body. Now, why did he kill him? That isn’t revealed. All we know is, despite some of the threats, Trevor may have legitimately been in trouble when calling Paula, hoping she would have done something drastic way sooner.
I Got Too Much Going On Right Now: Paula, Detective Gonzales, Geri, Rudy, Suzie, Mallory, Hazel, Karl
Luckily for Paula, she escapes Trevor’s home, but she does leave Hazel’s cleats behind. That causes minor issues, but the bigger problem is that being distracted by this Trevor situation and having no friends leads to Paula opening up. Specifically, she does to Rudy and Geri, who are for hearing this piping hot tea, and for Geri, who wants to go from fact-checking to being a writer, this is an opportunity. The kind she may bring to Suzie, and who knows, maybe she’ll expose Paula, maybe she won’t?
The only thing that is clear is that not calling the police does raise an eyebrow when Detective Gonzales follows up on Paula’s lead and discovers Trevor’s body. Also, despite how Karl seemed like a decent dude, who just fell out of love with Paula – he’s trifling. He cheated on her with a co-worker, his current live-in girlfriend, Mallory, who is two-faced. She tries to play nice with Paula, despite their history, but Paula knows the truth. Anything said to her will be used in the custody battle.
Thus making it clear, Paula really did rely heavily on Trevor to have someone, besides her kid, to talk to.
Give Me A Break: Paula, Trevor’s Partner, Hazel, Steve
But that could change! Paula signs up to be a soccer coach for Hazel’s team, since it makes her look dependable, and allows her to spend time with Hazel more.
An unexpected bonus is that the other parent, the co-coach, is Steve, who is also divorced, and seems like a nice guy. Sadly though, as Paula is getting acquainted with Steve, the team, and helping Hazel with feeling ostracized, Trevor’s Partner pieces together Paula was the one who escaped and knows what he did. How? By the cleats Paula forgot at Trevor’s house.

Review and Commentary
Highlights
Gie Seems Like Someone You Could Love To Hate [82/100]
Let’s be real, most people in Paula’s life, outside her daughter, could be classified as love to hate. But, Gie? There is something special about that one. Maybe because you know she is about to use Paula’s moment of vulnerability, her confession, for a come-up? If not Gie weaponizing being nice in order to protect her position and clear a path for herself? It’s hard to say.
However, if she gets exposed, I will relish in the moment.
Detective Gonzales Is The Type Who Could Grow On You [83/100]
From dismissive to suspicious, and seemingly one of the more serious detectives compared to her peers, she may not be as she initially came off. Granted, she doesn’t seem like an ally to Paula, but maybe not a foe either? It’s hard to say, but her dry humor does seem like it could grow on you and make it so; even if she is a neutral party, she is a welcome sight when in a scene.
Paula As A Mom [83.5/100]
Paula not having any friends or notable relationships with adults that could be described as healthy or positive puts the magnifying glass on her as a mom. Which, between YABA and her plight with her ex, makes you feel for her in a genuine way. She isn’t just a likable character, an underdog, but a person who has flaws, is trying, but isn’t made to be pitied.
She made mistakes and is paying for them, but nothing she has done, as of yet, is worth a life sentence of damnation, and her relationship with Hazel proves that.
On The Fence
The Mallory Factor [78/100]
I hate the fact that Mallory and Karl started off as an affair. Granted, could it have been emotional more than physical? Maybe. The jury is still out.
However, while I hate how the situation pushed Karl into a stereotypical ex-husband, Mallory does seem like someone dangerous, in a fun way. Mainly because of how she seems able and willing to befriend Paula, who is in desperate need of one, but Paula is aware of her games. Never mind, Karl has outright said that some of his ideas regarding custody come from Mallory, so to see how she works, nearly tricking Paula into saying something which could be used in court, was diabolical.
I hope we get to see her get taken down.
How They Handle Trevor’s Partner Being A Threat To Paula [75/100]
There is a strong potential for them to overdo it regarding what they have Paula up against. Between the custody issues, no real friends, no notable family, her finances, and the type of loneliness that veers towards slight desperation? She is already in enough danger, mentally and emotionally. So adding Trevor’s lover, who presents physical danger, could push things over the edge.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [80/100]
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is still on the bubble. Paula is a wonderful character, but she is in a world filled with other characters who don’t necessarily grab hold of you. They can certainly grow on you, but with the way AppleTV+ is, there is rarely much room for a gray area. Either things are going to be notably good or disappointing, and we haven’t reached that fork in the road yet.
