It’s Not Like I Chose This Life: Paula, Karl, Hazel, Trevor
Paula is divorced, doesn’t have any friends, and her closest relationships are with her daughter, Hazel, and a cam boy named Trevor. Her ex, Karl? He has moved on and constantly makes life difficult by threatening Paula’s ability to see her daughter.
This isn’t the life Paula chose – living alone in an apartment, just making enough to have visitation rights. But, she is treading water.
Things At Work Aren’t Much Better: Paula, Rudy, Suzie, Geri
As a day job, Paula is a fact-checker in a world where opinions lead to more ad dollars. Because of that, her team is small, sarcastic, and feels a bit expendable. However, despite this, Paula hopes she can get or stay on Suzie’s, an influencer at the company, good side.
Why? A promotion. Not just one that would offer more money, but the kind of stability that could help Paula with her custody issues. Sadly though, despite seemingly being decent at her job, neither Rudy nor Geri, who work with her, seem to be genuinely rooting for her success.
I don’t Have The Capacity For This: Paula, Karl, Trevor, Hazel, Detective Gonzales
It isn’t made clear what happened between Paula and Karl. At times, things seem awkward, but peaceful. Not enough to give Hazel hope her parents could get back together, but enough hope for Paula to think Karl won’t make her life hard because he can.
But then Trevor decides to ask Paula for $15,000, stage a whole kidnapping, and get really aggressive about getting that money. I’m talking, calling Karl, Paula calling the police, and having to use her fact-checking skills to find Trevor to get him to stop.
Now, why is Paula doing this and not the police? Because Detective Gonzales seems to see Paula as a woman who fell for a scam, and who should change her number. That’s not helpful. So, with Trevor mentioning Hazel and really threatening her, she finds his home, enters with a hockey stick, and finds Trevor dead. Thus showing he was in trouble, and maybe it wasn’t a scam.
However, what Paula didn’t factor in was the person who killed him still being in the house and seemingly on their way to chop Trevor’s body up.

Review and Commentary
Highlights
Paula Is Likable But Flawed [84/100]
Tatiana Maslany is the type of actress who you can’t really imagine playing a villain. Misunderstood, off their rocker, understandably seeking revenge? Yes. But, outright bad? No.
But, this doesn’t mean she is bland. There is just something clearly wrong with Paula. Karl hints at it, like she had an incident in the past. It could even be what was the final straw or reason for their divorce. And it is the tease of that imperfection that makes her just a little less easy to love, which could make it all the more difficult not to root for her to win.
Being Unsure How To Feel About Karl [83/100]
Inherently, Karl is easy to hate. He is the ex-husband, he is presented as the person getting in the way of Paula having quality time with Hazel, and it is pushed that he has moved on. Everything is set up for him to be persona non grata.
Yet, even with him being an ass at times, he shows himself kind as well. There is this push that he isn’t trying to punish Paula, but knows something we don’t, which is why we instantly are against him. This hints that maybe there is more than meets the eye, and Karl isn’t the bad guy, just misunderstood as much as Paula is, making him an interesting wild card.
On The Fence
The Mystery That Is Trevor [78/100]
All signs pointed to Trevor being a scam artist. Now, why be one after how many weeks or months of Paula being a client? Hard to say. Plus, all things considered, she seems like a bad mark for while she does live in New York City, so she has to be making some money, she just got divorced. How would she get $15,000?
Never mind, as much as losing Hazel is a threat, calling Karl pretty much would destroy his leverage, right? This is why seeing him dead in the tub was surprising. Trevor did the whole switch-up, from crying and begging to revealing all he knows to push Paula to get with the program. So, this whole situation is intriguing, but admittedly a touch confusing.
Paula’s Work Life [73/100]
While Paula’s personal life with Karl, and the situation with Trevor, brings you closer to the screen, delighted in what could happen next, her workplace does not – at all. Between bosses who don’t value her, or what she does, or co-workers who seemingly couldn’t give a damn about what is going on, the news organization Paula works in does the show no favors.
Not to the point, yet, of being an outright liability, for it does provide some background on how she could find Trevor, using her fact-finding skills. But, beyond that? I can’t say I’m not glad this isn’t a full hour if it means more Rudy and the others.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [79/100]
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed starts strong thanks to the charm of its characters, the strange situation its lead is in, and the question of what’s to come? Especially since the main threat to Paula’s life doesn’t make a huge amount of sense.
