Recap

How It Began – Byron, Hazel

How does someone like Hazel, who grew up in a small town, end up with someone like Byron? Well, being spotted at a party and, with the way he tells it, basically being held captive for the next ten years. Though it maybe wasn’t until three years ago, when Byron first pitched “Made For Love,” that Hazel realized that she might not be able to will herself into loving Byron.

But what perhaps really kicked it into gear is not just Byron talking about making “Made For Love,” but their relationship no longer being this isolated thing in “The Hub.” With a reporter, Keegan James, asking questions and forcing Hazel to really take a look at her relationship and understand why Byron came up with the idea for “Made For Love” and why he is so gung-ho on it, seemingly it hit her.

Thus, she eventually tried to kill herself but, luckily, the dolphin Byron has long been testing on, Zelda, revealed a way out. Thus leading to Hazel’s escape, which we saw in the premiere episode.

Where We Are Now – Byron, Hazel, Liver

This brings us to Hazel asking for a divorce, and Byron really not for this idea. In fact, he turns it down and tries to manipulate Hazel but, after ten years, she is really done with him, and the chip is what truly kills any desire to get back together with Byron. And to really make it clear she is done, she finds the bartender, Liver, who she finds attractive, and gets him to masturbate in front of her.

Now, why have him do that? Well, as a means to put Byron on notice, it appears. But whether or not he’ll free Hazel after that display of rebellion? Well, it seems unlikely.

Things To Note | Question(s) Left Unanswered

  1. Are Byron and Hazel legally married or just married in Byron’s mind?

It Might Be Better When You Don’t Consume Multiple Episodes At A Time

One of the things Netflix has made clear is that as much as many people may love to consume an entire season in one sitting or over a weekend, not all shows can handle the weight of that. At least if you are watching for anything beyond mindless entertainment. In the case of Made For Love, even though only three episodes were offered to start, it very much shows itself as the kind of show which would struggle on network television, isn’t edgy enough for cable TV, yet with HBO Max needing, craving content, Made For Love is given a chance.

Which we’re not knocking. One of the things we love about the streaming wars is how the need for content has allowed created opportunities for unfamiliar stories, people, and characters. Also, it has given those who have been in the industry for some time the opportunity to be the lead rather than supporting characters or memorable guest stars.

But with Made For Love, it ultimately feels like a show that is more about having a constant stream of content than making this into anything resembling a flagship show which will bring HBO Max more subscribers.

Made For Love continues to be something to watch, but by no means a show you should rush to see when it premieres.
