The Gang Is All Here: Lance, Xavier, Markelle, Dominic, Desmond

Lance shares a house with his four friends. Xavier is the fashion guy, Domonic the video game streamer, Desmond the rapper, Markelle the fitness guru, and Lance? Well, he is the auteur. Together, they pooled their money to rent a house and made it into a creative space where they hope to build the foundation of their careers.

I Thought Picture Day Ended In High School: Kevin, Sheila, Leland, Taylor, Lance

But, for Lance, before he gets to do his first major gig, courtesy of Xavier, Lance has to pop home real quick for a family picture. Note: Only his mom, Sheila, really seems to give a damn about this picture. His dad, Kevin, forgot. Lance’s little sister, Taylor, isn’t dressed for a family photo, and Leland? He hasn’t even arrived.

However, while his mom does end up having to fuss and call out damn near everyone, she eventually gets her family picture.

The Big Gig: Lance, Xavier, Markelle, Dominic, Desmond, Leland

When it comes to Lance and Leland’s company, Freelance Productions, they are the main ones who seem to understand the terminology and technology. The rest? They want to help but aren’t necessarily helpful. The gig Xavier got Lance is a wedding, and things are a hot mess on both Lance’s side of things and the wedding itself.

Yet, thanks to Leland, it looked like things could come together, with him using AI in the clutch to get part of the wedding videos done. However, when it was time to send over the completed video, Xavier restored the card to factory settings, thus giving Lance his first major gig and simultaneously screwing it up.

New Characters in Episode 0

Lance (Spence Moore II)

Lance (Spence Moore II) – Freelance
  • Character Summary: The auteur who has knowledge in every aspect of filming, just needs the right opportunity, spearheaded the creation house idea, and is trying to not just be someone with potential, but potential realized.

Xavier (B Nard)

Xavier (B Nard) – Freelance
  • Character Summary: With an eye for fashion and the memory of a goldfish, Xavier is the type who is good to know for his connections but might not be the best to rely on when in the clutch.

Markelle (Lou Young)

Markelle (Lou Young) – Freelance
  • Character Summary: After a failed D1 football career, Markelle is taking his love for fitness to the internet, and with unconventional training routines, he is starting to make a name for himself.

Domonic (René Vaca)

Domonic (René Vaca) – Freelance
  • Character Summary: Loud, a bit ignorant, and also a touch weird, Domonic has all you would need to be a notable online personality.

Desmond (Lou Ratchett)

Desmond (Lou Ratchett) – Freelance
  • Character Summary: Depending on who you ask, Desmond is either an up-and-coming rapper or someone who is good with the producing and production end of music, but maybe shouldn’t pursue being a lyricist.

Kevin (KevOnStage)

Kevin (KevOnStage), Sheila (Christianee Porter), Taylor (London Arrington), Lance (Spence Moore II), and Leland (Elijah M. Cooper) – Freelance
  • Character Summary: Kevin is Lance’s father.

Sheila (Christianee Porter)

  • Character Summary: Sheila is Lance’s mother, who has a lot of energy and can be a bit much for Lance sometimes – hence his preference to pay rent somewhere for his mental health, rather than save money living rent-free in his old room.

Leland (Elijah M. Cooper)

  • Character Summary: Leland is Lance’s right-hand, brother, and business partner, but is the type who believes in doing things the easy way rather than the hard way. Especially if it can be done efficiently.

Taylor (London Arrington)

  • Character Summary: Taylor is Lance’s little sister who still lives at home.

Question(s) Left Unanswered & Predictions

  • If this ever went to series, it would probably end up on BET+ or AllBlk, assuming they’d be willing to invest. It does have some old-school Freeform vibes, but that channel is probably one contract renewal between Disney and its partners away from being shut down.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

A Wonderful Foundation Is Set [82/100]

While there were a lot of people introduced in the span of 41 minutes, they were all distinct enough not to get mixed up, and also appreciate what they could bring if this ever got a series order. On top of that, you don’t get the vibe that everything and the kitchen sink was thrown at you.

This is treated as a pilot to a show you can imagine watching week to week, maybe even binging. You want to see Lance eventually have to decide between sticking with his crew or maybe taking a solo opportunity out to LA to make his dreams come true. Then, with meeting his family, you want to get more into why, for his mental health, he couldn’t stay with them, even if it was rent-free.

It isn’t just Lance, however; you want to see explored further. Considering almost everyone is from the area, meeting Dominic’s people, including his girlfriend, with whom he’s always bickering, is bound to be hilarious. Desmond doing a concert, and either flopping or thriving, again could be fire. The potential storylines from these guys learning, developing, failing, bouncing back, and maybe contemplating quitting and settling, you can see it all there. Add in that you’d be hard-pressed to find something like Freelance out there on a major platform, and it adds to its value and your hope that this becomes one of Sundance’s first big hits from its Episodic platform.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [82/100]

Freelance is the comedy we needed to see during Sundance and a show we hope to see not only premiere, but have a marketing budget by or within 2027.
