Episode 3 “Feelings Can Become Amplified” Recap (With Spoilers)

Can’t I Just Be With The Happy People?: Molly, Dr. Pankowitz, Sonya, Nikki

While Sonya is a wonderful palliative care social worker and group leader, the stage 4 group she leads is depressing and Molly would rather be with the more fun stage 1 to stage 3 group. But, she can’t speak up there and when she does, she gets kicked out for being the depressing one.

Sadly, things aren’t really better outside of group. Nikki is struggling being Molly’s solo support team, to the point of being fired from her job, and Dr. Pankowitz seems strangely uncomfortable with the menopausal side effects Molly is going through. Which makes it so, outside of the sex Molly is having, which is frequent but not orgasmic, there isn’t much in the way of positive things going on.

Men Are Into Weird Things, And I Am Too: Molly, Sonya, Nikki, Neighbor

But, even with the men, including a 25-year-old (Marcello Hernández), things are weird. Molly still needs to masturbate to finish, which is frustrating, and through her neighbor, who often times is infuriating, she has discovered she has a domination kink.

At first, she is weirded out by this, shamed she can’t get off to normal sex. But, to make matters worse, as part of thei thing she kicks the neighbor in the groin and ends up having to need surgery due to the damage cancer has not only done to her hip, but also her leg.

However, with Nikki and Sonya by her side, at least she is working through this shame.

New Cast and Characters

Sonya (Esco Jouley)

Sonya (Esco Jouley)
  • Check out other productions we’ve covered starring this actor: [Link to Actor’s Tag]
  • Character Summary: Sonya is the social worker assigned to Molly whose goal isnt’ just helping Molly through her cancer, but also her pursuit of an orgasm. With Sonya being kink-friendly and pro-pleasure, it makes a wonderful person to have.

Neighbor (Rob Delaney)

Neighbor (Rob Delaney)
  • Check out other productions we’ve covered starring this actor: [Link to Actor’s Tag]
  • Character Summary: Molly’s neighbor works for 311 for the City, and is kind of a horrid neighbor. He drops food in the elevator and hall, plays video games and music loud, and also makes loud noises when he masturbates. If Molly wasn’t into him, he’d be almost as bad as having cancer.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

Sonya & Her Sex Talk [85/100]

It isn’t 100% clear if Steve was right in saying that what happened to Molly, because of her mom’s ex-boyfriend, caused complicated feelings about sex. However, I feel like Sonya’s speech regarding shame and desire was the first step to Molly coming to a form of acceptance she never gave herself permission to have.

I would even say, though I didn’t take much note of Sonya previously, the more she speaks, the more they develop her, the more I hope that this can be a launch pad for the actress. For with the way people are around Molly, almost subtle caricatures of people at times, there is something different and special about Sonya. Almost like, while a real person could inspire everyone else, and be tinkered with, those behind “Dying For Sex” wanted to specifically honor this one person and get either the words, or how they made the real-life Molly feel, just right.

Molly Owning She Is A Freak [86/100]

Molly

How can you not love Molly’s journey? Is it kind of messy? Yes. But, as said before, Michelle Williams and hearing Molly’s inner monologue create an intimacy that allows for the kind of pass you may not extend to similar characters.

And while, yes, “Dying For Sex” is a sex dramaedy of sorts, it never loses its earnestness and has crafted this tight rope walk I feel would be hard for any other show to replicate.

Low Points

Dr. Pankowitz [67/100]

Explain to me how you can be a doctor uncomfortable with menopause, vaginal dryness and similar issues? Dr. Pankowitz isn’t a young man, surely has seen and been through some things, so why did he need Sonya like a crutch regarding a rather simple conversation about side effects?

Overall

Our Overall Rating [79/100]

The highs of Molly and Sonya were no match for a WTF moment from Dr. Pankowitz.
