Episode 13 Recap (With Spoilers)
Is This An Isolation Tactic: Natsu, Akitsu, Jinya, Kyuuzou
It’s unclear if getting Kyuuzou to turn into a demon was part of Suzune’s plan, never mind having him hurt his replacement daughter. However, you can imagine having her dear brother having to either let his replacement sister die or kill his father was probably so sweet it was ecstasy. Heck, maybe it was meant to isolate him to the point he became a full demon?
While Suzune’s end goal is unclear, what does become clear is that she put Jinya in a position where he realized either he would have to end his father’s life and lose Natsu, or allow himself to die, and perhaps Natsu too. There was no winning, but ultimately, he decided to kill Kyuuzou, much to the chagrin of Natsu.

But, in Jinya’s defense, it wasn’t easy. His relationship with his father was at the point of finally healing, and to kill him before he could enjoy it for an extended amount of time? It reminded Jinya, despite all the demons he had killed and also absorbed, he still had a beating human heart, and it was hurting over what he had to do.
A Familiar Face: Jinya, Akitsu, Shirayuki
With Kyuuzou killed, and Akitsu handling the demon he was tased with, both seek out the source of Yuki-no-Nagori and up the mountain climb, Akitsu taps out. Never mind the hike, the cold, and just being tired from walking so long, as it becomes clear this fight might be personal, he realizes it would be best to step aside. Plus, with trying to keep his ace under his sleeve, in case he ever has to fight Jinya, he would rather let Jinya face Suzune, potentially, alone.
However, Suzune is nowhere to be found. The only thing that is found is Shirayuki’s body, which seemingly held all the hate and rage that Suzune used to make her sake. But, with Jinya holding the body in his arms, it seems Shirayuki gets to finally pass on, and maybe, to a point, Jinya gets to move on as well. For despite how this should fuel his need for revenge, since who else but Suzune could bring Shirayuki’s body there, he doesn’t seem to go on the hunt for her.
Checking In: Ofuu, Jinya, Suzune, Sadanaga

Due to killing Kyuuzou, it appears Natsu and Zenji have decided to avoid Sadanga’s soba shop in order to not run into Jinya. As you can imagine, this affects Sadanaga’s pockets, but he doesn’t know the full details, so he doesn’t ask questions. However, Jinya’s comments regarding how Sadanaga’s food tastes seem to raise up something in Ofuu.
What exactly? It is hard to say. Take note, she is a much older demon than he is, especially one who transformed due to trauma, so maybe loss of taste comes with superior demon qualities? But, it can’t be discounted that she doesn’t see or look at Jinya like a younger brother, so it could very well be that she feels something is off and hoped he’d just say what. He doesn’t, but I think she at least wanted to give him space, including walking halfway home with him, to see if he needed to say anything.
But as Jinya is coming to terms with what he has lost and still has, Suzune seems proud of what she accomplished, and while she doesn’t promise to do more, you know she will come up with new ways to torture her older brother.

Highlights
The Suzune Build Continues [83/100]
Suzune and Jinya meeting face to face is going to be one of the biggest things Sword of the Demon Hunter has to offer. So, as much as we want it to happen, I also understand the show is built upon that, and everything after is going to struggle to match that. Now, does this mean I’m not frustrated by Jinya finding Shirayuki’s corpse over Suzune waiting for him? No.
However, as shown, Sword of the Demon Hunter struggles with making episodes that are compelling, have a good payoff, and I would say, while that has changed, there hasn’t been a complete 180 turn. So, as frustrating as it is, building to Suzune and Jinya eventually meeting again, but not in this episode, was the safest decision.
Reigniting The Feeling Of Loss [82/100]

What will make Sword of the Demon Hunter suffer the most is that, because it had such a strong premiere featuring loss, combat, and building up its characters in such a way you felt connected, it will forever be chasing that high point. Now, the action has kept steady, but I’d submit that the threat of loss and building of its characters, Sword of the Demon Hunter, hasn’t really made a noticeable effort to get back to what it initially presented.
But with Jinya losing his father, especially with them not only reconciling but also being able to just hang out and enjoy each other, build a future, and not just dwell on the past, that hits hard. Then add in losing Natsu, the only living person who could give him a sense of family as well? It makes what Ofuu seems to be trying to offer him all the more meaningful, and if he did end up with a kid, it could make his being a high school student make sense, if he is watching over a descendant or something akin to that.
Clarity On Suzune’s Origins [81/100]
I felt Suzune’s origins were a bit murky. It wasn’t clear to me if she was taken in, similar to Natsu, or something far more complicated. But now we have the answer: Suzune’s mother, shared with Jinya, then Jinta, was assaulted by a demon, and Suzune’s birth likely killed her mom. Because of that, Kyuuzou couldn’t stand her and blamed her for such a significant loss in his life.
This makes everything make a bit more sense, and why Suzune latched onto Jinta so tightly and felt betrayed when he chose someone who didn’t love him like she felt he deserved. In a way, it was an insult to her that he would accept a woman treating him so cruelly, and though grossly immature, to show her love, she did what she did.
In many ways, this further develops, showing Suzune as stunted as a child while everyone grew up, since her response was childish. But, there remains the question: with Suzune and Jinya having the ability to live for eons, is there any path that can lead to reconciliation? It happened between Jinya and his On The Fence
On The Fence
The Future Feels Confusing And Unnecessary [73/100]
The more we see in the past, it makes what we’ve seen in the future, or modern times, feel more and more out of place. From Jinya being a high school student, carrying a weapon, to not seeing him seek out or hunt demons once – so many questions exist and yet they avoid giving us anything. I’m not 100% sure when the next visit to the present is, but I hope it doesn’t become a disappointment.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [79/100]
Sword of the Demon Hunter is still in its redemption phase, and while for a few episodes now it has been good, it hasn’t been long enough to feel like it has turned a corner and deserves forgiveness. For while dangling Suzune like a carrot is good for now, she can’t be the only thing we wait for. There has to be more to this than what should be the final battle of the show, and as much as we appreciate Suzune forcing Jinya to feel and be reminded he is still human, that will not be enough.
