Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation: Season 3 Episode 6 – Recap and Review

A familiar face Rudy thought was firmly in his past appears, and the person is someone he feels the need to apologize to.

Episode 6 “Another Domestic Disaster?” Recap and Details

After three episodes of establishing Rudy’s domestic bliss, we’re reminded of the person who got sacrificed on his way to joy: Sara. Roxy and Sylphie find themselves on a job to protect Ariel and the Princess of Ranoa, and Rudy joins since it’s an easy job, and the household needs money. But he didn’t expect to see Sara, and it was awkward.

Now, lucky for him, Suzanne, who was part of Counter Arrow with them, does keep in touch with both and has explained, in no explicit detail, that Rudy had a “Condition.” So when Rudy stops dodging Sara and they talk, there is no animosity. In fact, they apologize to each other over how they acted.

But, with Sylphie seeing another one of Rudy’s exes come about, she does seem worried he may marry again. However, with Rudy painting Sara as someone he tried to make a rebound after Eris, he makes it clear that won’t happen – with her. However, with Rudy noting that women who saved him during a dark time are his type, he does leave room for Eris to maybe become his third wife.

Which, with her becoming a Sword God this episode, after defeating Nina in yet another contest, she may finally seek out Rudy and bridge the gap between what Rujierd told him and the story viewers have been made partly privy to.

Other Noteworthy Information

  • Zenith’s Continued Recovery: While Rudy is playing with Lucie, Zenith seems to be able to sense Lucie is getting hungry. It gives Rudy continued hope that, while Zenith is still non-verbal, her other senses, including maternal, are returning.
  • Rudy and Lucie’s Relationship: Though Rudy struggled with making her laugh before, it seems Lucie and Rudy are getting notably close. In fact, the visiting Suzanne almost paints the picture that Rudy is an outlier amongst fathers because of how he doesn’t like handing off Lucie and plays an active role in being a parent.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

Closure Between Rudy and Sara [84/100]

Sara could have easily been a character from Rudy’s past who we never got an update on. So for the show to not only have her come around, but Rudy to speak with her about what happened, then the two exchange what is going on in their lives, and Rudy express his side in a mature way? Often when we talk about growth on this show, it is about Rudy’s relationships. Be it Paul, with Norn, or even Sylphie and Roxy. They’ve all been core relationships—not optional ones.

So the growth he showed in his conversation with Sara, even if he was avoiding the conversation at first, shows Rudy can handle conflict. Never mind, he can handle conversations that are awkward, could go left, become public and embarrassing, and lead to people knowing him in ways that take away his control of the narrative.

For let’s be clear, Sara being mature about Rudy having erectile dysfunction wasn’t promised. She could have teased him about it, been petty because of how things ended, and wanted to do damage beyond the smack she gave him. So, being willing to accept what could happen and handling it as he did was noteworthy.

On top of that, it sets a precedent for when Eris comes around and that conversation, which may not be as easy to sit through. Especially since, while Sara had a personality which could be a little gruff, she has nothing on Eris. Someone who may have a soft spot for Rudy, but who knows how she may handle him confronting her or questioning her feelings.

Continuing To Dive Into Sylphie’s Complicated Feelings Regarding Sharing Rudy [83/100]

What I appreciate about how the show is handling Sylphie’s feelings about Rudy loving other women is that it doesn’t consume her character. She still works for Ariel, has a child she takes care of when she can, and also has a full house, including Roxy, whom she is working on befriending. But she is still married to her childhood sweetheart/crush. On top of that, she is his first wife.

So seeing her, just as she settles in with Roxy, contemplate what if Rudy wants to marry Sara and how that could work, was something. Note: It wasn’t done with glee, mainly acceptance, in a “I just want you to be around people who love you.” But, I’m glad Rudy made it clear he had standards for anyone he was going to bring into their open marriage/ polyamorous situation.

Also, round of applause for her making it clear she has limits too. Mainly that she isn’t going to allow Rudy to sneak around and have surprise babies on her. That, to me, furthered the idea she isn’t allowing because of some insecurity, or to hold onto him by any means possible. More so, her beliefs allow for him to have other wives, and because she can make it work, and it has thus far, she is open to more coming about.

Rudy Not Only Healing His Relationships, But Setting Precedents For Others [81/100]

I think it would be one thing if Rudy had the tools to reconcile with Norn, Paul, Sara, and that be it. But, I think, in his conversation with Suzanne about how he is as a father, he is also setting precedents too. Yes, he has multiple wives, but he is still a good guy. He isn’t collecting them for the sake of sex, and when it comes to his children, yes, there are multiple women in the household, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t do his part.

Now, to be fair, we haven’t seen him change a diaper, and he didn’t calm Lucie when she was fussing in the episode. However, I don’t get the vibe Rudy is a fun times only type of dad. He is the type who goes against cultural norms, in that world (and honestly our world to a point).

Which makes me wonder, as Cliff works on possibly having kids, as Rudy’s sisters grow up, and even his friends, will he be looked at and made into a standard of expectation? People value Rudy’s opinions, not just his strength, so I am genuinely curious about whether he’ll be treated as an outlier or an attainable possibility.

On The Fence

Eris & Her Ascent To Sword God [77/100]

While I appreciate getting to see what Eris was up to, I do feel like we’ve missed out so much on her training. Gal had masters of other sword techniques come from near and far, with more promised to arrive beyond the two we’ve seen. So, to not get that and to note that no one has become a Sword God since Ghislaine, which means years, if not decades, and yet, Eris will within, what? A year? Maybe less? It sort of undercuts the importance of the title.

But that leads to another issue: What do all of these titles mean? With spellcasters, it is about what type of magic you can handle – that’s cut and dry. However, even with previous training, Eris jumping from Sword Saint, over Sword King and Sword Emperor, right to Sword God? That feels wrong.

And to make matters worse, Gal doesn’t explain the difference; he pushes Nina, Gino, and Eris to tell him what they think it is. None of them are noted as correct; he even makes it seem Gino wasn’t even ready to be part of this promotion conversation with his answer. So it undercuts Eris’ promotion since the only significance behind it comes from one line about how long it has been since someone last got this promotion.

Also, could I add, with her feelings for Rudy being her secret weapon to be calm and powerful, it would have been nice to see her hone in on that more. For all the confirmation we got about Rudy’s growth as a father, husband, brother, and friend, Eris seems to have just started her journey.

But, who knows? Maybe Rudy may teach her that it isn’t just about her being strong enough to deserve his love, but also kind enough, empathetic enough, and also showing she is ready and willing to be part of a community, like his household, where people aren’t expected to do what she says.

Our Overall Rating [81/100]

This feels like the end of an arc. We’ve established Rudy’s home environment, his growth, and with the return of Eris, while it isn’t clear if we may switch to her journey to Rudy, or see Rudy get the itch to adventure, something feels on the horizon. So while the short term is uncertain, it seems clear what will be coming by the end of this cour is Rudy and Eris coming face to face. With a conversation that isn’t going to be easy for either party.
