Overview/ Review (with Spoilers)

Demi-chan wa Kataritai (Interviews With Monster Girls) firmly established itself as a slice of life anime featuring a few world famous monsters and while they do have some issues, they are approached in such a melancholy or indifferent way that it is hard to take and keep interest at times.

Topic 1: The Single, and Wants to Mingle, Succubus (Satou)

With Satou being a succubus, it makes dating hard. After all, when do you know when it isn’t your powers that is attracting a guy vs. because he has a real genuine interest in you? Because of that, Satou doesn’t try, lives out in the middle of nowhere, and is on the first and last train of the day to avoid the headache of getting her hopes up.

Commentary

To be perfectly honest, I’m struggling to care. I built up this certain idea of us getting to watch how demis deal with discrimination, the issues of being publicly who they are, and all of that is totally absent. We pretty much got a harem show with watered down monster girls with no exploration of their problems.

Topic 2: It’s Just A Crush/ The Inappropriate Sensei (Takahashi, Satou, Hikari and Machi)

As seen in the last episode, Satou-sensei is starting to take a liking to Takahashi. In this episode, it becomes a full on crush and then that makes three girls into him. Hikari who he asks inappropriate questions dealing with how erotic bloodsucking is, leading to a kiss cheek and then there is Machi who asks for some advice from Satou and openly admits to having a crush on Takahashi. Something which she doesn’t strangely talk down at all. It’s like, the fact he is her teacher and she his student doesn’t click in her mind. Instead, she speaks on trying to look more mature, changing her hairstyle and while it is noted Satou is 24, none of this makes sense.

Commentary

I may end up dropping this anime. Mostly because, I’m losing anything there is to latch onto and I can’t deal with how weird this harem is getting. While Machi doesn’t look like a child, as Hikari does, I cannot understand why Satou would not only think of Machi as some kind of competition but support this child perhaps not only having a crush but pursuing it! All the while, Takahashi isn’t helping matters since he almost seems unashamed of his pursuit of these demi girls. In fact, in pursuit of having a conversation with Kusakabe, who some boys scare off, he gets mad at them for doing so because he wants to talk to them. Then, to show how idiotic he is, he notes it if for his own personal interest. Then he starts mumbling about how he should approach her in front of a crowd of students. All of which are looking at him strangely because, so it seems, there are some people who think what is going on is not normal or becoming of a teacher.
