Back In The Midwest: Bobby
We jump all the way back to the night of the fire and learn Bobby not only saw the lifeless body of his kids but the last thing he said to his wife was a lie. One that, with thinking her kids are safe, maybe that was what allowed her to die in some form of peace. Which, as you can imagine, messes someone up. In fact, Bobby got messed up so bad he might have drunk himself to the point of alcohol poisoning, if not suicide considering he saw his family again.
However, he finds himself forced to get cleaned up, and within 6 months, he feels ready to no longer be benched and get out on the field. Problem is, his lieutenant at the time doesn’t think the team is ready so he instead assists Bobby with a transfer.
Welcome To California: Bobby
Which is what led him to California and what might have been a promotion. One which comes on the heels of the 118 going through 6 captains in 2 years. So, one of the first things Bobby has to deal with is people not used to captains sticking around, people pissed they got passed up, and trying to show he is not only in it for the long haul but cares about them. All the while dealing with not just a shift in culture, but 911 calls.
Which leads to him being awkward a bit, getting someone suspended and transferred, but it’s one day at a time. Something that could also be said for Bobby’s sobriety. At almost a year, he falls off the wagon, seemingly because things were going too good. However, thanks to a rather good priest, who also acts as a therapist, Bobby gets back on the wagon.
Changing The Culture: Bobby, Hen, Chimney
Leading to Bobby making serious changes. The first being what Hen calls family dinner so that everyone links up once a day and they can get a feel where each other’s head is at. A welcomed change by all and that is what makes Bobby revealing, in the present, he may lose his job devastating to the team. Not just because folks like Chimney were expecting food, but they’ve been around long enough to recognize the difference between a good and bad captain and surely don’t want the hands of times going backwards.

It Made Revisiting Bobby’s Story Worth It
I’m not going to lie, with us seeing Bobby wail, talk about suicide, and go into his past during the first season, I questioned what more was there to go over? Well, the answer was the transition period from Minnesota to LA. Something that won’t make you cry, though seeing the dead faces of Bobby’s kids and wife will remind you of why people bringing them up is monstrously messed up. Also, it deepens why he was suicidal for years and felt such immense guilt.
But that’s not all, with us going over both Hen and Chimney’s past, it seemed only right for us to see the early days of Bobby and how they reacted to him. How he, alongside those two, shifted the culture to the one we love today. Heck, we even see Athena, a then very married woman, and Bobby have their first few encounters.
So while this episode may not have led you to grab a box of Kleenex, it does help build to whatever the decision of whether Bobby gets fired or not.
