The Gist

The TLDR Recap/ Review

  1. Despite who the advice comes from, Evan decides to tell Bree that he cheated on her but spares the detail of cheating on her with Lucy.
  2. Learning this leads Bree to internalize why this happened, and she finds herself seeking Oliver to maybe cheat, but instead just tap dances on the line until she learns Evan wouldn’t forgive her as easily as she could forgive him. Thus leading to her to cheat as well.
  3. Meanwhile, as Lucy and Leo grow close, Pippa does with Chris. But with Diana finding Pippa in a room with a closed door, looking like she was drugged, and Chris entering from the bathroom, red flags go up for her to the point of calling a truce with Lucy to get Pippa out of there.
  4. This situation pushes the need to ask if something happened, what does Pippa remember, but she quickly shuts it down for reasons not dove into, but assumingly so whatever happened doesn’t define her like her relationship with Wrigley.
  5. Eventually, I hope we get a Pippa-focused episode, for I’m getting flashbacks of feeling like she has this giant façade up, with a wall to keep anyone from knowing her further, and I want to peek behind it.
  6. That aside, at least the Wrigley thing isn’t going to dominate her storyline like Stephen lurks in Lucy’s storyline. Him being the TA for one of her classes led to a giant sigh, but with her destroying his iPhone and Wrigley not helping, it should have been expected he’d get his lick back.
  7. Speaking of Wrigley, what’s next for him since his character seems to have nothing notable going on whatsoever? Yes, he misses Drew and still has friends, but what are we actually going to see from him?
  8. Together, I almost feel like I spoke too soon with the premiere, thinking this would be a sophomore season for the books, but it could also be that my tolerance for messy situations isn’t as high as I thought.

Storyline Recap

Good Girl Gone Bad – Oliver, Bree, Evan, Stephen

With Stephen wanting to create distance between Lucy and her friends, Bree and Evan being together is a major problem. So, using his situation with Diana, Stephen pushes Evan to tell Bree the truth, which he does. Bree internalizes the why and goes to Oliver, slightly looking for an ego boost and partly trying to see if something could happen between them, but Oliver puts a pin on that and sends Bree on her way.

Hot and bothered, she sleeps with Evan and presents the idea she cheated to test if he would forgive her like she is willing to forgive him. He fails the test, so Bree ends up sleeping with Oliver in retaliation.

This Is How It Began – Leo, Lucy, Pippa, Diana, Chris

You might be wondering how in the world did Pippa and Diana end up together? Well, we see the foundation in this episode. Lucy and Pippa went out, without Bree since Bree didn’t want to be babysat all night, and as Lucy focused on Leo, Pippa focused on Chris.

Lucy, for the most part, is having a good time, and while Leo, the next day, gets violent in a way that raises red flags, the night before he was as cute as can be. On the other hand, Chris was found in an awkward situation.

How so? Diana was at the same party as Lucy and Pippa and went upstairs to find a door that was hard to open. When Diana walked in, Pippa looked like she was drugged, and this raised red flags for Diana due to things that happened in her past. Enter Chris, looking very nonchalant, though not completely guilty, and the worst was assumed, Lucy was called for, and Pippa was taken home.

Now, as for what happened? Who knows? Also, Pippa makes it clear she does not want to know and for Lucy to drop it. But, considering Lydia hates Lucy in 2015, let’s just assume Lucy does not drop it and pressed the situation.

Highlights

Pippa Continues To Make You Ask What Is She Hiding?

Pippa is one of the few who hasn’t spilled their guts, and while she is involved in drama, I’d submit she doesn’t jump at the chance to start it – the majority of the time. Because of this, she is often around and involved but not necessarily revealing much, if anything, about herself. Like her hair color, she is a chameleon and rarely seems comfortable enough in her environment to be herself.

With that in mind, it makes me wonder if the only thing she was ever hiding was being queer or if there are other things?

On The Fence

What To Do With Wrigley

Both in the past and semi-present, nothing is going on with Wrigley. We know he is a burnout, and maybe some credit should be given to the show for not having him bounce back. However, even with a reduced role, there is this need to ask, “So, why is he around?” and we don’t really get much of an answer.

Everyone seems uncomfortable around him, obligated to still interact with him, and you’re telling me, for damn near a decade, he is still part of this friend group out of guilt? Most of these people don’t come off that nice to hold themselves to such an obligation.

Bree’s Trajectory

I think our issue with Bree is that her sleeping with Oliver is one of the first out-of-character moments, and we don’t know where this is going. Granted, she reconciles with Evan, so clearly they make up, but that doesn’t discount how much time might be needed to get behind this shift.

Never mind, with this being an ensemble, does “Tell Me Lies” have enough time, and are willing to make enough effort for this to turn around? Which isn’t at all to downplay Evan coming off as a good guy in season one and what he did. However, expectations for Bree were much higher, even though she, like Evan, don’t associate with the best people.

Stephen’s Playbook Feels Tired

I’m trying to imagine, if each season is roughly a semester, then reconciling all those post-college years, how long will we have to watch Lucy and Stephen orbit each other? It’s just not fun anymore, and the more I see, the more I roll my eyes.

Don’t get me wrong, Lucy is cute and can be interesting, but should you invest all your petty into one person at this level? I get she broke his iPhone when iPhones were new and expensive, but come on now.
