Plot Overview

Poor Dorothy. At 13 weeks, her son, Jericho, died of SIDS, and she suffered a complete mental breakdown. One she has only recently recovered from thanks to transitory object therapy. Meaning, she has a doll, which may look like Jericho, as a means to ease herself into the acceptance her son died.

Problem is, Dorothy isn’t getting better, and while Sean loves his wife, there is a need to worry more and more. Especially now that Dorothy is going back to work and decides to hire 18-year-old Leanne for $900 a month. Someone who not only is a little aloof but very religious, which freaks Sean out a bit.

Though what is far scarier is the fact that the doll is one day replaced by an actual baby, and it isn’t 100% clear how, why, or what happened?

Question(s) Left Unanswered

  1. Did Leanne steal a baby, or did she conjure a spirit and change the doll into flesh?

Highlights

It’s Less About Being Creepy And More About Getting Your Wheels Turning

One of the things you have to appreciate about most of the things M. Night Shyamalan is involved in, there is usually a push to build up to the twist. Which, in the case of Servant, it comes in the form of the baby somehow becoming flesh. Something that could be because Leanne is from some rural part of Wisconsin and has powers? If not, because Sean pushes the idea she is off, her outright stealing a baby. The potential is endless, but I will admit, with this show already having a 2 season order, I feel unsure what can really be done here in the long run.

Overall

Met Expectations

With Basgallop having experience in drama and the supernatural, paired with M. Night Shyamalan’s name attached, this definitely met expectations.

Continue To Watch?

Oh yeah. The push to understand what happened to Jericho is high and whether or not Leanne has some sort of powers, stole a child, or what.

First Impression: Optimistic

While there is a certain need to question whether this can achieve longevity, especially once the reveal happens, starting off, you’ll be hooked.
