Episode Focus: Decisions, Decisions (Sophia & Jay)

With this old-timey style of dress not selling, even when Sophia makes it $5, she begins to have other people question her. One person, in particular, Dax, questions her idea of forcing something onto the market rather than testing things out. However, being that her stubbornness has gotten her this far, she pays him no mind. Yet, upon the desire to quit her job, she stops because she becomes unsure of herself.

But with her hernia busting and her dad being called, she is reminded who she is. She is relentless, imaginative, and will keep pushing her vision until other people see it. That was the person he once believed in, but then something happened. So, with that being the closest thing to a compliment she has probably received in years, she decides to go all in with her business and quit her job.

Commentary

We’re going to set aside Rick’s crush on Sophia since Rick barely got to play a role in the show. Instead, we are going to focus on Jay revealing how he and Sophia moved a lot when she was a kid and how she seemingly always found a way to make friends. This was something notable to me since you could be given the impression, before this episode, that Sophia and Jay didn’t have a good relationship. One because of Jay not being around or maybe hard on her all the time. Yet, it seems it wasn’t really like that. He comes off as the doting dad who did the best he could and because he has seen his kid’s potential, he expects more and knows she can do it.

Leading to the next thing worth noting: being that in the last episode it seemed like Sophia didn’t have much of a fashion sense, how did she develop that? Could it be she is the Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg of Fashion School? What changed in a period of a couple of years? Did the beat of her drum just begin to align with mainstream opinion or did Annie rub off on her a little bit?

Subplot 1: Keeping It Cas (Sophia and Shane)

Shane and Sophia are still not a couple. Sophia wants to keep it casual, but Shane wants labels. If only because he is going on tour and thinks labels will help him not cheat.

Commentary

Being that Sophia has been largely misunderstood by me thus far, I believe anything I come up with maybe way off the mark. Yet, with her mother not being a topic really dived into, alongside her fear of bridges, I can only assume she fears being left like her dad was. I mean, there is a need to factor Shane cheated on his ex in the past, and still needs mental reminders not to, but she seems into him so I wonder why she isn’t into the idea of things being official.
