A Shared History: Asahi, Shio
While things aren’t made 100% clear, it can at least be understood Shio is either Asahi’s little sister or niece. Now, as for why he is looking for her and didn’t end up dead? Well, it is because Shio and her mom, or big sister, ran away and Asahi fending off and stuck with his abusive father. Someone who Asahi may have freedom from now so he is looking for Shio. If not, being that his sister hasn’t given him updates, he is now searching.
Commentary
Trauma is such a universal thing on this show. Asahi is dealing with his father being abusive, Shio seems to remember some of the abuse she was shielded from. However, with Shio, it seems she blocked a lot of it out. Hence why she can’t remember who came before Satou, even Asahi.
Making you wonder, how did Satou meet Shio and become trusted enough to find a way to get rid of who Shio was being taken care of. Much less, how much did Shio see since, clearly, she had to see something. The glitch look over the woman’s face has to be from whatever Satou may have done bashing her brains in. Thus leading to Shio probably blanking out that image for it is too traumatic.
The Outside World: Shio, Satou, Asahi
With Satou being out late, Shio gets worried. Add in the ghost of her former caretaker and she wanders the streets. One time missing Asahi by a handful of feet and Satou? Oh, you know she flips out. To the point that, if she ever finds Shio, especially with who finds her, never mind what will happen to them. She may go Misery on Shio and make sure she isn’t going anywhere ever again.
Commentary
Being that Shio, assumingly, is in Satou’s aunt’s home, I wonder if she remembers how to get back to her house? If not, whether the ghost was guiding her. For it isn’t made clear where exactly she was trying to take her to but it was surely out of that apartment.
Taiyou x Shio: Shio, Taiyou
As Shio wanders about the streets, going who knows where, Taiyou comes across her and he gets weirdly excited. Actually, weird maybe a little bit too ambiguous. Weird is Shio’s relationship with Satou. Shio’s introduction and time with Taiyou brings a very creepy red flag. For taking into consideration what Taiyou said in episode 2, and how he seemingly wants more power in any relationship or interaction, him being around Shio is scary.
Not to say he is guaranteed to hurt her or do something vile, but you just don’t know with this show. Especially since, until he gets jumped by the kids who assaulted Asahi, it seemed he was going to do as Satou did. Take the child home and isolate her as much as possible.
Commentary
Being that the kind of trauma everyone is dealing with has led them to unhealthy coping mechanisms, it is hard to say where the line is. Currently, we know violence is on the table. Satou murdered people over Shio. As for sex? That is harder to say. Taiyou was definitely taken advantage of and that messed him up. However, whether he would take advantage of Shio the way he was? That’s harder to say. Violence is abundant in anime but sexual violence, not so much. There aren’t often Game of Thrones or your average HBO show type of stuff going on. Never mind with children involved. Yet, the creepiness of this series makes you wonder what would have happened if Taiyou didn’t get jumped.
Highlights
- We’re slowly starting to dive into Shio and Asahi’s background and learning what happened before Satou came into the picture.
- With Taiyou’s interaction with Shio, the creep factor reached a new level and makes you question where is the line.
