Synopsis

Based on the manga and anime of the same name, “Yu Yu Hakusho” revolves around Yusuke Urameshi, a rebellious loner who looks out for those who need protection. Yusuke dies after saving a child from a car accident, but Yusuke’s death reveals more mysteries about our world and the spiritual world because his death was unexpected. 

The spiritual world becomes aware that a demon world is infiltrating our world. Demons are hunting and harming people, and Yusuke is tasked with putting an end to the demon invasion. He’s resurrected as a spirit detective who has to hunt down yokai, demon spirits, in the human world. In these 5 episodes, Yusuke must train and become more powerful to fight the demon world. He also learns more about the yokai and makes alliances along the way. 

Notable Locations & Items

  • Human World (Episode 1): Where most of the action takes place and where Keiko, Kazuma, and Yusuke live. While the human world is at risk of being destroyed, it’s the only world unaware of the other worlds existing.
  • Spirit World (Episode 1): The spirit world is where people go when they die. The spirit world can see and surveil the human world. This is where Botan and Koenma reside.
  • Demon World (Episode 1): The demon world has been sealed off from other worlds and looks to dominate and destroy the human world.
  • Artifacts of Darkness: There are three artifacts from the spirit world that Yusuke needs to retrieve: the orb of baast, the forlorn of hope, and the shadow sword. 

Terminology

  • Yokai (Episode 1): Yokai roughly translates to demons, but demons can equally be spirits who are more complicated than western evil demons.

Other Noteworthy Information

  • “YuYu Hakusho” is TV-MA due to some profanity, smoking, and bloody violence.

Yusuke 

Played by: Takumi Kitamura

Yusuke is best described as a lone wolf, someone who embodies his own moral code and doesn’t care if it clashes with others. As a skilled fighter, Yusuke is usually cool and calm, but when his loved ones are in danger, he’ll do anything to protect them. Yusuke risks his own life protecting a child, but is resurrected as a spirit detective to investigate the circumstances of how he died and prevent further danger to the human world.

  • Takumi Kitamura is a member of a musical group called Dish, where he sings and plays guitar.

Keiko 

Played by: Sei Shiraishi

Keiko is Yusuke’s lifelong friend and the voice of reason in Yusuke’s life. She sees the good in him and is one of the few people to truly understand Yusuke. Yusuke only agrees to become a spirit detective to save Keiko from dying in a fire.

Botan

Played by: Kotone Furukawa

Botan is Yusuke’s guide in the spirit world and works for Koenma. She’s bright, bubbly, and knows how to cheer Yusuke up and get on his nerves. Nevertheless, Botan is by Yusuke’s side to help him understand the demon world and spirit world.

  • Episode 3 conveys Botan’s belief and support that Yusuke can overcome any challenge. 

Kazuma

Played by: Shûhei Uesugi

Kazuma is initially Yusuke’s nemesis. Kazuma sees himself as a brilliant fighter but is constantly beat by Yusuke. But Kazuma tries hard and doesn’t give up. He’s more willing than Yusuke to help the spirit world and train as much as possible to better himself.

Kurama

Played by:  Jun Shison

Kurama is known for his bright red hair, his cunning mind, and for being a yokai. Kurama and Yusuke may initially be at odds, but Yusuke sees another side to Kurama when Kurama is willing to sacrifice himself for his mother.

Hiei

Played by: Kanata Hongô

Hiei is a yokai who is most skilled with a sword. Like Yusuke, Hiei can be stubborn and prefers to be alone. But Hiei is on a mission to save his sister, and he empathizes with Yusuke’s quest to save Keiko.

  • The actor is also known for their role in “Nana 2.”

  • Kanata Hongô has been acting for 20 years and started as a child actor.

Koenma

Played by: Keita Machida 

Koenma is the ruler of the Spirit World and the son of the Great King Enma. While Koenma likes to bark orders at Yusuke, Yusuke rarely likes to obey orders, putting the two men at odds when fighting for the same cause.
