Storylines/ Recap
- Most of the episode focuses on Belly and Jeremiah having their last hoorah, with Anika and Taylor joining Belly, and Jeremiah having Redbird, Conrad, Steven, and even Denise.
- However, things shift as Conrad learns about Lacie and decides to not only tell Belly about that, but also confront her defending Jeremiah, and he eventually confesses he still has feelings for her.
- As that happens, Taylor tries to be a good wing woman for Steven, regarding Denise, and Denise and Steven could have hooked up. However, a very drunk Lucinda gets in the way of that after Taylor insults her.
- Alongside all that, Laurel and John hook up again, perhaps so she can take her mind off Kayleigh being in Cousins, never mind Kayleigh trying to befriend Laurel and get her involved in last-minute wedding planning.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
Anika Noting How Messy This All Is [81/100]
Being that Taylor is Belly’s best friend and grew up around Jeremiah and Conrad, I feel she has normalized the messiness and the drama a bit. This makes Anika seeing things with new eyes, going from hearing about it to seeing it live, oh so fun to watch.
Granted, was she tempted for a minute to pursue Conrad, till Taylor advised against it – yes. Which, based on how this episode went, could have made things worse. However, just hearing her comments from Conrad being Belly’s first, and her second, Jeremiah, reminds you that The Summer I Turned Pretty exists in the real world—one in which there is something very weird about someone going from one sibling to another.
Conrad’s Confession & The Main Three’s Needs [81.5/100]

Recognizing that Conrad blew things up with Belly 4 years ago and has been ducking and dodging her ever since, I won’t pretend that anything about what he is saying or doing is appropriate. However, I would be remiss to say I didn’t get in my feelings a bit.
While I don’t think Belly, Jeremiah, or Conrad are in a place where a relationship would be good for them at all, I also recognize each one of them desperately needs someone. Jeremiah wants someone who can help fuel him being an extrovert and take care of the details that would stress him out. Conrad wants someone he doesn’t have to perform for, and they will stick around even when he isn’t at his most lovable.
Belly? I get the sense she wants to belong. Whether it is from being the younger sister or often one of the youngest in the group, never mind straight edge up until now, there is this sense she is okay with not fitting in to a point, but she never wants to be excluded. So, finding her person, allows her to never deal with those feelings.
Then, add in the dynamic of their parents? Lauren and John divorcing, Susannah latching onto Laurel since her husband was cheating on her, with little to no shame. You can understand why there is a rush to get married for Jeremiah, and while Conrad is throwing a Hail Mary. All three seem so afraid of being alone and desperate to latch onto the familiar; they seem ready for a pyrrhic battle just to have someone in the end. And honestly, it’s becoming a bit sad.
Just to refocus on Conrad and his confession, it seems everyone but him is capable of having an outside relationship, and it would be a viable option. Agnes seems like his Denise, yet they couldn’t click. On top of that, as much as it was clear him injuring himself, in small ways, was to get Belly’s attention; lest we forget, Conrad has the eldest sibling issue. He was made out to be the mature one, dependable one, and while Laurel saw past that, no one else really did. Thus, Jeremiah got all the time and attention. He was pushed to be the one who needed more, and this is the result.
Conrad, more than ever, feels he needs Belly; she might be the only one meant for him, and if he can’t have her, all he can maybe do is drown himself in work. Which, because of the nature of his work, numbing himself to life isn’t really an option. Thus, leaving him in the limbo we see him in, where he is far more focused on being distracted than really handling his issues.
Which reminds me, where is his therapist?
Taylor Wanting The Best For The Person She May Love The Most [84/100]
Taylor is a real one. Yeah, she cheated on her ex extensively, as did Steven, but to see her, despite wishing to get back with Steven, push Denise in his direction? To not plant seeds of doubt, but damn near say and do everything needed for those two to get together, or at least hook up? I feel like she is perhaps better than the majority of the characters on this show.
I’d even give it to her that she seems to genuinely want Steven in her life as a friend, even if it may not evolve once again into them being lovers. Unlike Conrad, I think there is a maturity there that is not given credit for, which sometimes makes me wish Belly would lean on her more and enjoy being single rather than chasing the same two boys she has known all her life, and who have led her to forego all others.
Feeling Bad For Lucinda [82/100]

When you look at the majority of parents we meet on the show, they are doing well financially and have options. Lucinda is the only exception, and it hurts a bit. She is bubbly, probably only second to Susannah in terms of consistently supporting her offspring, and in some ways, Lucinda feels like the most normal character out of everyone.
Granted, my gauge of normal is that she isn’t upper-middle-class, if not outright rich. Never mind, she struggles with dating. Laurel basically could have John anytime she wants, Adam has his assistant, he has had an affair with for who knows how long, and really, out of most, if not all active characters, Lucinda may be the only one without viable options. It even seems she is at a point of living vicariously through Taylor, who may very well be her best friend.
Which, as shown by how Taylor talks about her mom, the feelings might be one-sided. I mean, even in terms of the festivities, Lucinda was drinking alone. She was probably too embarrassing for Taylor, never mind considered too old, to join in the festivities with Belly, and Laurel didn’t reach out either. It all makes you feel bad for her since she seems to be a good person, a nice one even, but also the type of adult who doesn’t know what they are doing, and while Taylor helps, I feel her patience is wearing thin.
Understanding How Alike Belly and Jeremiah Are [80/100]
When it comes to Belly and Jeremiah, both are people pleasers. I would even go as far as to say that, at the cost of themselves, and only when pushed into a corner, do they say what they want, and even then, they do it meekly.
So, to see the cracks in Belly’s perception of Jeremiah begin to hit, never mind maybe realizing how much of a disservice she has done to herself, in service of him? I won’t say things are going to blow up, but I feel like there could be a much-needed reckoning.
Never mind a subtle, “I told you so” from Laurel.
Steven and Denise [86/100]
I think what drives my interest so much regarding Steven and Denise is that they are equally yoked, and it often feels like you don’t get to see couples like that too often. Opposites attract seems to be the go-to, or maybe meet-cute situations, where people from different lives come together. With Steven and Denise, they mesh well physically, business-wise, education-wise, and it just seems less like a fantasy and more like that old-school reality of how people meet.
You know, the person you have decent banter with at work, who you don’t know if you’re flirting with or just trading compliments sometimes, and then things evolve because you let your guard down one day. With everyone else, you don’t really get that. Jeremiah is fun, but doesn’t seem on Belly’s level. Conrad might be more mature, but I don’t see bringing the best out of Belly.
Even John, with Laurel, both are in academia, but something feels off about them. It’s hard to say what, but it all makes Denise and Steven feel so natural, so warm, so comforting, because it feels less like a fantasy and more what could and should be possible.
On The Fence
Trying To Understand Laurel and John’s Relationship/ John’s Purpose On This Show [74/100]
I think the issue here is that we barely know John. Considering he made it clear he would support Belly’s wedding early on, and we got to see none of that, I think it was a missed opportunity. Alongside that, Laurel being hot and cold regarding their relationship, I feel like that should open the door to see John outside of his ex-wife’s orbit.
What’s his relationship with his kids when Laurel is nowhere to be seen? Belly made a surprising comment about Jeremiah doing something White this episode, so comes the question of, with all these flashbacks, how she handled being an Asian girl/woman with a dad she doesn’t necessarily look like.
Heck, with Steven, it seems Adam is more of an influence in his life than his own father. Which, considering the way Adam has shown himself, you’d think John would be making sure to acknowledge Adam’s success, business-wise, yet reminding Stephen how to be a better man than him. I mean, look at Steven’s dating history with cheating – that’s an Adam trait. So, when it comes to Denise, it would be cool if John stepped in, in some form or fashion, or he was sought out instead of this “Hi” and “Bye” relationship he has with his kids.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [81/100]
With a steady build of drama, while characters might be struggling, it’s a good time to be a fan.
Other Noteworthy Information
- Laurel notes Julia and Skye can’t make Belly’s wedding, so don’t expect those season 2 characters to show up.
- Denise has her Master’s Degree
- Jeremiah has been offered a full-time job at his dad’s company
Question(s) Left Unanswered & Predictions
- The wedding ceremony will likely follow the book, and we see things thoroughly fall apart.
Video Recap/ Review Text
- Intro Slide
- Recap: It’s time for Belly and Jeremiah’s final hoorah, and, as to be expected when Jeremiah is involved, things don’t go as planned.
- Recap: Conrad learns Jeremiah cheated on Belly, leading him to tell her and confess his feelings, even though she is more than willing to defend Jeremiah.
- Recap: But, on a positive note, Taylor makes the perfect wingman for Steven, and Denise almost hooked up with Steven! At least until a very drunk and alone Lucinda got in the way.
- Recap: However, at the very least, Laurel and John rekindle whatever they have going on, and get some uninterrupted.

- Review: I got surprisingly emotional over this episode, even when I know I shouldn’t have. Whether it was Conrad’s confession, Taylor hooking Steven up, or how Lucinda handled being insulted by Taylor, I got teary-eyed.
- Review: Though I have to admit, as much as I feel bad for Lucinda, I’m still very pro Steven and Denise, and her getting in the way of them getting to that next level made me upset.
- Review: Also, I can’t let go of how heavy the show pushes you to feel for Conrad, including with flashbacks, as if we didn’t spend almost a season of him treating her terribly.
- Review: But, in many ways, what example does anyone have of a healthy relationship, maybe even boundaries, to know what is or isn’t good for them, to avoid all this messiness?
- Overall (81/100): From Anika’s comical comments, the emotions that could lead to tears, and the promise of a very dramatic nuptial ceremony, what’s not to like beyond John being underutilized?
