Poppa’s House: Season 1 Episode 12 – Recap/ Review

“Poppa’s House” relies heavily on Poppa and Junior, and the formula long perfected, which leads to an episode that shows “Poppa’s House” can’t continue to rely on those two.

Episode Title: Slumber Party
Air Date: February 24, 2025
Network: CBS
Director(s): Phill Lewis
Writer(s): Adrian Colon, Jr.

Recap

In celebration of Grandparents Day, Junior wants his dad to come to a planned Slumber Party. The problem is that he sees his dad as Mr. No, so he feels like he has to trick him and lure him into coming. He uses Ivy, JJ, Catherine, even his kids, and Poppa says no to every one of them.

However, when Junior just asks, he says yes and reveals that, having had a club foot as a kid and being embarrassed by the boot he needed to wear to fix it, he isolated himself. This made it so that, with Junior not inviting him, he felt triggered. Junior brings up his own fears of rejection, and with both opening up and actually communicating, it allows them both to get what they ultimately wanted.

Trajectory

Trajectory (66/100): Decline

JJ in Poppa’s House: Season 1 Episode 12, directed by Phill Lewis (CBS)

I don’t want to say “Poppa’s House” is circling the drain, but I do think the formula is getting tired and bland. Junior, being a grown little man, isn’t funny and is honestly annoying. It helps you understand, beyond the basket full of childhood trauma Poppa has, why he often tries to keep a distance from Junior. Yeah, that is his son. He loves him, but he also loves drama, and it seems exhausting.

Add in that the episode doesn’t really provide a counterbalance, even with Charo randomly showing up, and it just makes it seem we’re in for a rough ride regarding the final episodes of the season, if not the series, if the ratings don’t pop back up.

“Poppa’s House” continues to do a disservice to the actresses on the show, as it starts to make its formula seem via Poppa’s weekly excuse for his actions.
