I’m In Danger: Lucy, Cooper
Lucy and Cooper are still heading towards New Vegas, but with Lucy hearing someone scream for help, you know she had to investigate. Of course, Cooper would rather leave the person to die, but even against his better judgment, he follows Lucy in, and they discover someone in a tunic.
This raises red flags for Cooper, but Lucy doesn’t know about the different factions, so she readies her last stimpak. That is, until radscorpions attack, including one larger than Lucy and Cooper.
Lucy is able to avoid being hurt, but Cooper gets stung. But, rather than give her stimpak to the man who has accompanied her and saved her life before, she gives it to the stranger in the tunic. Then, leaving Cooper in agony, Lucy walks that woman home to what appears to be a Caesar’s Legion camp.
Bud’s Gift To Norm: Norm
With unleashing all of Bud’s management trainees, and them not knowing better, Norm assumes the role of their boss. As for where Bud is? In a trash can, with his voice modulator broken, and put upside down so he has no means to move.
So, the first thing Norm does is get all these trainees to calm down, and once that is done, he pushes them to find a means to escape. Which, despite him damn near starving to death trying to come up with a way, the trainees realize the ventilation shaft is the best way out. But, in Norm’s defense, it takes them making a human ladder to get up there.
Ultimately, leaving Norm and the others on the surface, with their work cut out for them regarding building a town.
Why Should I Worry About Civil War When I Survived A Nuclear Blast?: Maximus, Dane, Quintus, Yosemite Elder, Grand Canyon Elder, Coronado Elder, Joseph (Max’s Dad), Julia (Max’s Mom), Paladin Harkness
After taking an episode off, Fallout trades focusing on Cooper’s past for focusing on Maximus’ past and present. This leads us to see the day Hank destroyed Shady Sands. Max’s mom was a housewife, Max’s dad seemingly was an engineer, a plumber, or someone who liked to tinker with things? They don’t give us much in the way of character development.
What we do learn, however, is that Hank used one of those brain control chips to send a caravan with a nuclear bomb, and while Max’s dad thought he had disabled the bomb, he didn’t. So, Max was stuffed into a refrigerator in the town he grew up in, and his family was annihilated.
Which leads us to the present. As a knight, Maximus has a squire, is popular, and seems to be Quintus’ right hand. However, Dane isn’t as taken as everyone else and smells BS. They can foresee the Elder Cleric’s lust for power, and they end up right. Elder Cleric Quintus gathers the western factions of the Brotherhood of Steel, including the Yosemite Elder, Grand Canyon Elder, and Coronado (presumably Colorado at one time) Elder, but intentionally keeps out the Commonwealth faction.
They are seduced with a potentially infinite amount of fusion cores, and as they celebrate the alliance, their knights fight, including Maximus. Someone who, despite how weak he appeared in season 1, bests someone who you’d think would overpower him, especially without power armor on. But, no sooner than Maximus technically breaking a codex rule about harming your fellow brother, a representative of the Commonwealth, Paladin Harkness, arrives – despite Quintus not sending an invitation.
New Characters in Episode 2
Yosemite Elder (Sisa Grey)

- Check out other productions we’ve covered starring this actor: [Link to Actor’s Tag]
- Character Summary: One of the few female leaders of the Brotherhood of Steel, Yosemite’s Elder is one of the first to be allured by Quintus’ plentiful fusion cores. However, before the seduction, she was the first to worry about civil war thanks to how Quintus was speaking. Also, she was concerned that, if her people joined Quintus’, they would be coerced into the more religious side of the Brotherhood.
Paladin Xander Harkness (Kumail Nanjiani)

- Check out other productions we’ve covered starring this actor: [Link to Actor’s Tag]
- Character Summary: A representative of the powerful Commonwealth chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel.
Grand Canyon Elder (Chris Browning)

- Check out other productions we’ve covered starring this actor: [Link to Actor’s Tag]
- Character Summary: With one of the most independent chapters of the Brotherhood, barely even being on the Commonwealth’s radar, the Grand Canyon Elder is perhaps one of the least interested in picking a fight with the Commonwealth. Though he would love to dispel the nasty rumors that his chapter likes to have sex with robots.
Coronado Elder (Brian Thompson)

- Check out other productions we’ve covered starring this actor: [Link to Actor’s Tag]
- Character Summary: The elder from Coronado comes from a chapter where women don’t get to talk, which naturally creates potential conflict between his people and the Yosemite chapter.
Joseph [Max’s Dad] (Bashir Salahuddin)

- Character Summary: Max’s mom was a housewife, happy to be somewhere that seemed safe after the bombs dropped.
Other Noteworthy Information
- Hank spends the episode testing on mice and, eventually, people, the mind control device Vault-Tec came up with. But, it seems he isn’t doing any engineering on the actual device, just slapping it on people and increasing the frequency of a device until the test subject explodes.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
Maximus’ Journey To The Dark Side [83/100]
While it has to be acknowledged that Maximus has sought power, safety, and a sense of belonging, I would submit that the route he is taking requires him to often turn a blind eye. Some things, like other knights playing with grenades, he will get involved in. Yet, even with having the Elder Cleric’s ear and some realm of influence, he doesn’t use it.
He doesn’t protest a war he is surely expected to fight, maybe even play a leader in a battle. Dane outright predicts what is to come, got Maximus to his position, yet he doesn’t heed their words. He has not become broken in like a horse, but he has willingly become submissive to the Elder Cleric’s will. But, with how the Brotherhood of Steel is, it seems clear that any sense of power he has gained, sense of safety due to his rank, or sense of belonging due to his accomplishments, will mean nothing if he ever steps out of line.
So let’s just hope if/when Dane says something, Maximus doesn’t continue to stand there and do as he has done before, and worry about himself.
Norm Leading His Own Faction [82/100]
Norm does come from stock meant to lead over generations, and it will be interesting to see, compared to his dad, how he handles his underlings. Take note, Norm hasn’t shown himself to be a people person, and waking everyone up was as much a survival tactic as his way of giving Bud the finger. So with that in mind, him leading a faction, on the surface, where he has never been, compared to these people who, granted, 200 years ago, used to live above ground, is going to be interesting.
Add to that, they likely are going to have a lot of questions, and if Norm isn’t careful, their curiosity could lead to the kind of explanation that could expose him. Now, what would happen if they find out he isn’t who he says he is? That’s hard to say.
If they go to the vault and learn he isn’t some big shot, he could explain how Vault-Tec did experiments on them, how the vault was failing, so he explored and leaned on them not checking his credentials. Also, if he does well on the surface, use some of his tech knowledge paired with his underling’s executive training, that could also provide him an out.
Either way, the possibilities may not be endless, but the few likely paths are interesting for you know it is inevitable that someone is going to bust Norm’s bubble – the only question is when and who?
The Brotherhood’s Storyline [85/100]
Being that the Brotherhood of Steel is seemingly going to be its own story for most of this season, unless they stumble on the fact that Vault-Tec has a mind control device, it means they need an epic story.
The potential of what can happen is exciting here, especially since, unlike with Norm’s storyline, things feel less inevitable. Will Maximus heed Dane’s warnings and say something, do something? Considering Quintus has a lust for power, will he start a civil war, and can he and the other Western chapters win? Can they broker peace and create a more equal Brotherhood, considering the power of the West now matches the capabilities of the East? Heck, considering Dane has nothing to lose at their station, could they be a wild card?
Take note, we don’t know how the Commonwealth found out about the Western chapters’ meeting. So, with that in mind, Dane could have told them, one of the elders, or they could have some sort of bug to maintain control. Again, there are so many possibilities here that take advantage of the fact that, yeah, in the games, you could join the Brotherhood of Steel, but never be this ingrained.
On The Fence
Lucy Role In The Show [73/100]
Lucy’s character can bring on complicated emotions, particularly if you played the games. She is easy to identify because her background is the setup for most games. Lucy is a vault dweller who never left the vault. She doesn’t know much, if anything, about the outside world, doesn’t have the best tools to survive, and, like in the games, she has a simple mission: Getting something or finding one person.
The plus of this is mainly in the familiarity of her character; the minus is that, because Lucy is written so much like the type of characters you start off with in the game, the lack of control over her decisions can be frustrating. For some, I can even imagine feeling like watching Lucy make decisions is like watching someone who is absolutely terrible at Fallout do a playthrough.
So, as much as you may appreciate her encountering Caesar’s Legion, a faction from Fallout: New Vegas, there is some frustration in you knowing she is going to pick the most asinine way to handle them.
Hank’s Storyline [72/100]
I feel like they could have cut Hank from this episode, and we wouldn’t have missed much. At least, in terms of him trying to get that mind control device working. For outside the blood splatter, which I’m sure is entertaining for some, what was the point here? After showing his involvement with Shady Sands being destroyed, they could have saved his experiments, and hopefully some kind of progress, which we didn’t get this episode, for episode 3 or 4.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [79/100]
While Lucy might be stuck in a “Do you remember this from the games?” At the very least, most of the show makes you excited for what could come next.
