Mama Brown Set The Precedent: Mama Brown, Preston, Alamo (Younger), Laurie, Bishop, Faye, Wayne, Rue, Jimenez, Bowman
Mama Brown was a hustler. There was a man named Preston, who most would consider a good man, and he was going to come into some money soon. Knowing this, Mama Brown put up with his scars and more since he would take care of her and Alamo. But once she got all she wanted, she had that man robbed blind.
The reason this storyline matters is that you get not only why Alamo has trust issues, but also why he takes to people who could be seen as social outcasts or in need of a second chance. Preston’s scars made him a bit of a pariah, but he was a good man, did right by Alamo and his momma, and yet still was left at his lowest.
That explains why Rue is given another chance, and her head isn’t knocked off, why Bishop is Alamo’s right hand, even if his social skills are minimal, and why Alamo was willing to work with Laurie before. Now, however, it’s because she threatens to take him to the FBI.
Mind you, this is a gift for Rue. If Laurie, even with what she has going on, would blackmail Alamo with going to the FBI, the DEA (Jimenez and Bowman) busting in can’t be too far-fetched now. So her taping their entire conversation, and Jimenez and Bowman hearing, has less of a chance of coming back on her. After all, surely Alamo could believe that Faye, Wayne, Laurie, and the rest have some deal with the government where they look away as long as they set people up for takedowns.
Basically, making him the Preston of this situation.
A Dream Delayed: Cassie, Nate, Lexi, Patty, Dylan, Rue, Jules
Nate is still getting his behind whipped for not paying Naz his money, and as that happens, Rue is realizing her happy ending may not include Jules. Mainly because Jules likes the idea of being a kept woman, and Rue can’t provide that. Plus, even if not knowing all of Cassie’s business, I’m sure she doesn’t want a similar life where her significant other’s fingers, or other parts of them, arrive at their doorstep. All because of their associations.
But, on the positive side, Cassie and Dylan have good on-camera chemistry. Also, she gets promoted to having an arc, to Lexi’s chagrin. Why? Well, Dylan said something which triggered Cassie’s memory of Naz at her wedding, and it led to her having a monologue that fit the character. Add in Cassie talking to Patty, who likes her, Lexi thinking exposing her sister would end Patty’s investment, and that backfiring, and Cassie ends up with a long-term job.
Granted, she has to quit OnlyFans, which she doesn’t tell Maddy about, and has to contend with Lexi, who hates her guts – even after Patty promotes Lexi to write Cassie’s storyline.
Off-Putting But Reliable: Bishop, Alamo, Rue, Maddy
Rue tries to warn Maddy about what she is getting into, but Maddy thinks she can handle Alamo. Note, Bishop makes it clear she might be a little too sure of herself, as he reveals he has done his research. But that’s just how Bishop is. He likes to fire warning shots, like calling Rue’s mom, to keep people in line.
In fact, that may help Rue stay on his and Alamo’s good side, being aware of Bishop’s dark side, as she is expected to get Alamo’s money back from Laurie’s ranch. Though with seeing a burning bush on her way there, she might reconsider doing acts that don’t seem to please God.

Review and Commentary
Highlights
Getting Alamo’s Backstory [87/100]
A man like Alamo deserves some mystique, for it allows him to remain cool, even at times when he has lost control. However, meeting Alamo’s mom, a man who was his step-dad for a time, puts things into perspective. Not to the point of making him feel overexposed, but understood.
Why does a man like him give so many people second chances, from Big Eddy to Rue? Because he met a man who was good, maybe did some dumb things, like fall in love with his momma, but was overall good. And with that in mind, I think that is the source of Alamo’s grace.
Now, does that grace extend to the point of letting you play him? No. With feeling his mom didn’t just sell Preston a fantasy but him as well, you can see the need for him to feel in on what’s going on. Hence his reaction to Maddy talking about giving Magick and Kitty time off, beyond Sunday. He is down for OnlyFans, another income stream, all of that.
However, with being a man who has relied on himself for so long, and the support of people who he believes fear him enough to not betray him, but love him enough to defend his person, it’s hard to let a woman like Maddy in. Never mind, the person she connected with the most is Magick, and while Magick’s hustle is respectable, and her loyalty to Alamo and his organization, she is still a con-artist.
And Maddy might be cute, but Alamo has surely met cuter. It’s just, were they as smart as Maddy?
Watching Lexi Deal With The Fact Cassie Is The Reason She Got The Opportunity She Wanted [82/100]
It’s understandable that Lexi would be jealous of Cassie. While Lexi is by no means ugly, Cassie is the type of woman who would garner more attention with ease, and only men like Fez, who are really looking for someone that could be a partner, may look at Lexi. Which, again, isn’t meant to be a dig, but you can see from how Lexi operates that she works hard because she doesn’t feel like she has something to fall back on if her effort isn’t acknowledged or appreciated.
Which is why, with Patty promoting her, you can see the mixed feelings. On one hand, Patty says she deserves this opportunity, but it doesn’t stray from Lexi’s mind that this came because of Cassie. Now, you could spin this and say that Cassie’s privilege got Lexi’s this job, and she should thank her sister for this. For I think Patty definitely saw Lexi as a good assistant, with occasionally good ideas, more than a bona fide writer, until she was trying to make Cassie look bad.
But, here is the thing, I firmly believe Lexi hates everything Cassie represents so vehemently that she wouldn’t just kill her off the show but, if she could get away with it, do it in real life. What Cassie represents is Lexi’s antithesis. So, while she got her this opportunity, I think she is going to resent Cassie, likely resent Patty, and probably double down on being a hater in the worst way.
All of which will likely make for good entertainment.
Rue’s Faith [85/100]
The Lord protects the simple, and when it comes to Rue, that seems especially true. Granted, does she fight against that protection a lot? Yes. But, there is no denying the drugs she did, to being a mule, to getting to switch from Laurie to Alamo, and all her slip-ups with him, if she wasn’t pursuing a closer relationship with God, she’d be dead.
But that’s the interesting thing here. Alongside Rue being around more Black people than ever before, she is also the rare depiction of someone her age, alongside Maddy, talking about faith, even church, in a positive light. Faith has become a bit of a niche topic, a genre within itself, and has been separated from the mainstream a bit. I don’t even think we see too many characters wearing crosses anymore, just because.
So, even if certain moments seem a bit too obvious, like Rue witnessing a burning bush, there are better moments like her in church, just taking it in, that conversation with her mom, and even listening to the bible. It’s weird in some ways, since it has become so rare, yet it is weirdly comforting that Rue is finding a relationship she can count on.
Low Points
Nate’s Storyline [63/100]
I get it. Nate has deserved an ass-whooping for what he put Maddy, Jules, and even Cassie through, to a point. The problem is, as much as Karma deserves to whip that ass, his story shouldn’t be on loop while that happens. They can have Naz put pressure on him while showing Nate make a way to get things done. But his spiraling, stomping on some flowers, before another one of his digits gets sent to Cassie, it is just a waste of screentime.
On The Fence
Jules [74/100]
At this point, Jules feels like a never-ending ellipsis. Not just for Rue, but Euphoria as a whole. She is an ex, and a part of me knows her place in Rue’s life can’t be understated since she is her first. Never mind, with the intimacy they have shared, I think Rue is far more relaxed around Jules than Maddy or even Lexi.
Lexi is judgmental, and Maddy is chill but also has her s*** together in such a way that, as shown at Nate’s wedding, she can only be messy to a certain point. That maturity takes away from Rue’s exploration and even learning process. So Jules has a place, but I feel like Jules is so stuck in where she is.
Now, someone was saying, I wish I could remember if it was on YouTube or Instagram, how Jules and Cassie are having parallel stories, between the sex work people accept and the sex work people damn. But, it feels like a discredit to the work being put into Cassie and has it where Jules gets to ride Rue and Cassie’s coattails, without doing much of note.
So, with two episodes left this season, and the likelihood of a 4th season so minuscule that it’s barely worth reading a fanfic of, I’m hoping Jules gets to rebound and end things on a high note. She was, in the past, someone who felt like a groundbreaking character.
Wanting More Maddy [78/100]
With Maddy getting a major boost via her interactions with Alamo, it was unfortunate to experience her taking a step back. Considering Cassie deletes her OF account, still having her day job, working with Alamo, and getting a handle on his industry, paired with what Alamo has going on with Rue? I’m not saying I want Maddy sucked into Alamo’s darker situations. I don’t want her to die. However, there were a lot of things that could have made her presence more prevalent.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [78/100]
There is no denying the good being done here. However, like past episodes, there remains this feeling of taking the good with the bad. Rue holds steady, but Nate has completely fallen off. Cassie’s storyline is erratic, and you could submit that it is to balance out Lexi. Jules may have moved forward, but seems stuck in the role of Rue’s love interest, and Maddy? It does seem as strong as her wings are, they don’t want her to fly too high, so they clip them.
It all just gives the idea that, as much as Alamo and his backstory are appreciated in this episode, and the character overall this season, we can’t really get Euphoria at its best, for it is too nostalgic regarding what characters made the show, and too hungry for the fame many found during and after the first two seasons.
