As the war comes toward what maybe the end, Tanya realizes there maybe an opening left which could ruin everything.

Episode Focus: We Won The Battle But Not The War (Tanya)

For the first time in, who knows when, Tanya is actually on the ropes. Her company-sized army is facing a battalion [note]According to Wikipedia, a company is usually 80-150 people and a battalion is 300 to 800[/note]. Thus leading to, so it seems, massive casualties, including some familiar faces and names.

But, alas, no one of note actually dies on Tanya’s squad. In fact, despite Anson Sioux having the blessing of Being X, and seeming immortal at times, he is defeated by trying to self-implode and take Tanya with him. However, he fails.

Thus leading to the belief of victory. That is, until it becomes quite weird how easily and willingly the Republic is giving up even before an armistice is signed. Some consider the willingness due to the Republic wanting to keep their aesthetics. For Tanya though, she thinks this reprieve is giving them the time to rebound. She wishes to deal one final blow but with everyone claiming victory, and war-weary, all of her requests for one final mission are denied. Especially once the armistice is officially signed.

Commentary

In the last episode, a commenter noted that the Empire actually loses the war and it will be interesting to see if Tanya not getting to do the mission is what cost the Empire victory. For, if it is, so comes the question of what may happen to her? Will she be put up to be executed and then Being X appears, as before, asking her about her faith? Heck, could god interfere and put Being X in its place?

Theories about the finale aside, this was another episode which showed how much Tanya has changed. If only because she saved one of her subordinate’s life. It wasn’t shocking, cause we have seen her soften up, but it does really show that this young person is changing and while she may not be someone who is faith-filled and holy, Being X has put Tanya in the position to become a better person. Which, perhaps, was the key mission goal in the long run. Her gaining faith is just a bonus.
