Episode 11 Recap (With Spoilers)
They Don’t Call It Spirits For Nothing: Jinya, Natsu, Zenji
With becoming the head clerk of Natsu and Jinya’s father’s business, a celebration is crafted, but, unfortunately, the sake that Zenji drinks, Yuki-no-Nagori, triggers alcoholism, and he, amongst many other men, find themselves becoming more focused on drinking than working. Natsu, naturally, gets worried and asks Jinya to help, and despite Zenji saying hurtful things, the two help him free himself from the drink and return to his old self.
A Woman Might Be Involved?: Suzune, Jinya, Akitsu
How did liquor take over so many men so quickly? Even to the point of leading to violence? Originally, there is the thought that maybe with the shift in what is happening in Japan culturally and economically, that is why. However, further investigation reveals demons might be involved, and with Akitsu showing up, and demons appearing in a warehouse looking for alcohol, the same brand that Zenji was drinking, this furthers suspicions.
But what truly seals the deal is the mention of a woman being involved, especially when those who drink turn violent, and all signs point to the elusive Suzune finally making a reappearance.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
Suzune Sighting [82/100]
Why did it take nearly 10 episodes to even catch a glimpse of Suzune? Yes, I’m complaining while overjoyed that there is some chance to see her either clash with Jinya or maybe have a difficult conversation. Either way, expectations have now been raised for episode 12 in a way that has brought on more excitement for the next episode than has been seen for most of this season.
On The Fence
Just When You Think Sword Of The Demon Hunter Has Found Its Rhythm, It Tries Something New [74/100]
Sword Of The Demon Hunter is not a consistent show. It doesn’t necessarily do arcs, storylines, it doesn’t consistently build towards anything, yet I wouldn’t call it a slice of life either. Because of this, it can be frustrating to watch it jump ahead to modern times for an episode or two, then back into the 1800s as if nothing had happened. Additionally, while Jinya continues to be a demon slayer, outside of Suzune, there has yet to be a notable demon he has faced of note since episode 1, also, outside of the build to Jinya fighting Hatsu, in episodes 3 and 4, there hasn’t been any build-up or anticipation, which raises the question of what the goal is here?
The long-term goal is understood, under Jinya being able to kill, stop, or reconcile with Suzune. However, the short-term goal from episode to episode appears weak, if not nonexistent. I’d even say, when it comes to characters, notable development or growth has become a trickle, and even with this episode noting Zenji’s promotion, I don’t feel like we’ve gotten to know him well enough for this to be as major to us as it is in the show.
Making it so, while we recognize, due to the year note that starts each episode, time is moving forward, often it feels there isn’t much to show for it.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [78/100]
Episode 11 of Sword of the Demon Hunter delivers a long-awaited moment with Suzune’s return, reigniting excitement and raising hopes for a meaningful clash or revelation. However, the series continues to suffer from a lack of narrative consistency and character development. With sudden time jumps and a shaky episode-to-episode focus, the show remains difficult to fully invest in, despite its intriguing long-term stakes.
