Overview
In episode 8, “The Island That Fell Into Nothingness” the story isn’t pushed ahead too far. Pretty much, outside of some background on Salva, and the aftermath of the Grodia crash, nothing significant happens.
Characters & Story (with Commentary)
Topic 1: Salva’s Dream (Salva)
Within the episode, one of the first things we learn is that Salva is adopted and Lwai is his little brother, not a robot which has been assigned to him, or anything like that. But, with Lwai being the biological heir, Salva has been pushed aside. Something which you’d think would have led to animosity, but I think what Salva is planning to do is be the Dick Cheney to Lwai more competent Bush, or perhaps set up the kingdom of Isla to be as he sees fit and maybe setup Lwai. It is all rather hard to say for while we know Salva can be a bit devious, it isn’t clear to what extent.
Now, as for Salva’s dream? Well, he wants them to be independent and not having to fear other nations. For his father would act foolish and silly to make their country seem like a non-threat. Yet, there is always the possibility in the background since Isla, and the capital Farah, held great riches and with them, at the time, having the only materials to build coils, and holding the 60th tower, it makes them a target. Perhaps explaining why Salva got into robotics since that would be the best way to protect the kingdom from those who would wish to invade it.
Topic 2: The Aftermath of the Grodia Crash (K.K., Cassidy, Lwai, and Yuri)
Due to the sphere, which we currently only know was awaken due to its sleep being disturbed, and that it focuses on males, Cassidy’s partner Sanchos is knocked out, as well as Salva. But, in honor of his brother, Lwai is going to continue his mission and maintains that the 50-million-dollar prize is still available. Leading to many venturing off, and being forced to face Easter Island’s now awakened defenses. Which, so it seems, are able to move because only certain zones of the island do coils not work, and they aren’t in those zone. But more on those zones in a minute.
When it comes to the hunt, while Chrysler goes on his own, K.K. seems to follow Yuri and we learn it is for less that honorable reasons. For with K.K. injecting something into Yuri, and then opening his briefcase and it having surgical tools, one can only assume K.K. is hunting more than just that 50-million-dollar coil. As for Cassidy, she is left behind to look after Salva, her partner Sanchos, and Salva’s robotic aide Lasithi.
Leaving one question: What is Lwai? We see Lwai as a baby and a child, but when a robot came to the cabin everyone was in to recuperate, he wasn’t targeted. Also, the sphere didn’t attack him. Leaving me to wonder if perhaps Lwai is either part, or wholly, a robot? After all, with it seeming Isla could have been attacked at any moment, one could only assume that perhaps they did end up attacked and Lwai might have died in the process. Leading to a Mira situation or the situation Kyoma was hoping for Miyabi.
Topic 3: Into The Nothingness (Kyoma)
Despite an interruption from Loser, not much happens with Kyoma. If anything, he simply provides crucial information on how dangerous the nothingness is for humans. For while most of the focus has been on how coil operated things don’t work, we learn the human body doesn’t function well in the nothingness either. In fact, within 20 seconds the human body shuts down within the nothingness. Pushing the idea that the stakes are certainly high and not just because of that 50-million-dollar bounty but because this coil has access to Kyoma’s past and possibly his mortality. For, in a way, it seems Kyoma might be ready to die to retrieve his memories and see Miyabi again.
Highlights
Salva’s Backstory: Though it was short and sweet, it was nice to have to get some sort of idea on why he is the way he is.
K.K. The Surgeon: It isn’t clear at all why K.K. injected Yuri with something and seemingly is going to operate on him, but it does present a bit of intrigue.
Low Points
Boring, Yet Distinct Personalities: With each collector, outside of Loser, Elizabeth, and of course Kyoma, seemingly built off of stereotypes, the novelty has worn off and the majority have become eye roll inducing.
On The Fence
What Is There Left To Cover?: There are 4 episodes after this and between Kyoma getting his memories back, alongside learning Loser’s past, why Mira was made, who killed her creator, and a few other things, you have to wonder what will get proper focus, remain a mystery, and what may just be given a shallow answer. Which worries me solely for this episode just was average at best and a bit of a bore thanks to the new collectors being a strong focus.
