Storyline Recap

Is He Working Or Cheating? – Charles, Nuria

With an estate in Spain, Nuria and her family know Charles, the name she calls The Jackal, is rich and works hard. However, with him working hard, even leaving his son’s second birthday to pursue his money, so comes raised eyebrows. Specifically, Nuria’s mother accuses Charles of cheating, but what doesn’t help is Nuria’s story.

You see, she pushed Charles to allow her to take him to the airport, and with that, he had to wait for her to leave so he could go to a safety deposit box. Following that, she caught a glance of him while he was leaving, and she was buying flowers. Telling this to her family started the rumors, and Nuria had a seed planted in her head.

Dead Bodies Quickly Lose Value – Alison, Larry, Bianca

With Emma dead, she isn’t much of a carrot to hang in front of Alison to get her to do as told. So, with about 24 hours before the news of her death gets out, Bianca presses Alison and in turn, Alison presses her husband, Larry, to call his brother Norman. In time, she gets what Bianca wants, and similar to Charles, Bianca drops a family event, on a smaller scale than a 2nd birthday, to head east to Belarus.

You’re Not Distracted, Are You? – Charles, Ms. Jansone

To figure out who screwed him, Charles heads back to Munich. With Ms. Jansone and her collective desperate to have Ulle Dag Charles killed by the 28th, when his software “River” will bring global financial transparency, he offers them a meeting. The 100 million price tag is still considered far too high among the collective, even if it is half on accepting and half on completion. However, Ms. Jansone is able to offer 20 million for commencement, which Charles accepts.

But, before moving on to his new target, he digs into his last and signs point to Manfred Fest, his target in the previous episode, running for national office, potentially being set up by his son, Elias, whom Charles nearly killed when in disguise.

Times Up – Bianca

With a geo-location, thanks to his cell phone, Bianca thought she had Norman. However, whether it was Alison, Larry, or just a healthy amount of paranoia, Norman was ready and able to take out two members of Bianca’s team and get away. However, it appears his equipment and more were left behind, which means Bianca may not have the man but may have proof of his association with Manfred’s assassination.

Patrick O’Kane as Larry

Larry is Alison’s husband, Norman’s older brother, the connection Bianca needs to track Norman down.

Ms. Jansone

Eleanor Matsuura as Zina Jansone

Ms. Jansone is Charles’s connection to a collective that wishes to kill Ulle Dag Charles and prevent his “River” program from creating global financial transparency.

Highlights

Bianca Losing Norman

A delicate balance is needed when creating a protagonist like Bianca. You have to make it so she is credible enough to complete her mission or task but not so great at her job that it makes the villain seem like fodder. Thus far, while she has gotten lucky, they have kept the balance for Bianca to appear like she can hold her own in combat and intellect.

Granted, will that last with her losing two of her own and her superiors not keen on her leading a task force? It’s hard to say. But any setback a hero faces just makes their triumph all the more greater.

On The Fence

Will Nuria Become A Liability?

To my understanding, this iteration of “The Day of the Jackal” expanded the man known as “Charles,” amongst other aliases, and so comes his wife who you have to question, was she necessary? Almost all villains have some weakness, and a family is the easiest to create. But, with an almost ride-or-die vibe to her, could she be someone who, upon learning the truth, protects Charles’ secret identity and provides him normalcy, if not a cover, or will her morals trump the lavish lifestyle she has, and will she blow up his life? If not, as shown with Emma, become a pawn to sacrifice to take down Charles?

Elias Murdering His Own Father, Potentially?

Like Charles, I am not interested in the politics and reasoning behind who hires him. Maybe Elias wanted to take out his conservative father to pave the way for his political ambitions; maybe he simply hated the man. Who knows? Again, nothing about Elias or German politics has been presented as something you’d want to know more about, so hopefully, with a bigger payday on the horizon, Charles moves on from the money he didn’t receive.

The Action

The violence when it came to what Charles did had a bit of a shock, and with Bianca, it seemed like standard action fare. I wonder if Charles working alone allowed for a certain level of tension and intensity we didn’t get with Bianca? If not, because we’re only in episode two and how Norman has been built up, the likelihood of her failure was too high to think anything would come of this.

It’s hard to say, and I’m not saying Bianca has lowered expectations, but I do feel the need to wonder if there may consistently be a disjointed feeling between when Bianca is in combat and when Charles is at work.
