Plot Recap

Truth Is – Emma, Higan

So, who is the person who rescued Higan? Who was the person guiding him into Auza City? Emma. The answer is that FBI agent Emma is also a lieutenant and was tasked with watching Higan all this time. But now, through him, she hopes to potentially use Higan to reform the Ninja Clan and council.

Hence, she rescues him and steals a Gusoku Gear, the suits the other ninjas wear, to make it so he is at least on par, if not superior to the others.

Battle To The Death – Emma, Higan, Lil, Big D

However, it’s Auza City, so while Emma has enough time to allow Higan to heal and work on the suit, time is limited due to Big D and Lil on her tail. Big D, thankfully for Emma, falls for a trap, but Lil isn’t as easy to trick.

He figures out she is hiding in a trailer that’s on the move, and with that, Emma has to hop into her suit and take Lil on, hoping to buy Higan enough time to sync with his Gusoku Gear. The battle is a challenge because Lil doesn’t hold back and because he is just about finding credible fights rather than being a ninja.

For example, he didn’t tell the others he figured out where she was because he wanted to fight someone else in Gosuku Gear. But the fight ends when the suit runs out of power, and Lil ensures Emma doesn’t have the chance to recharge.

As Emma fights for her life, Higan slowly but surely syncing up does not make for the kind of progress Emma hoped for. That is until he learns why Emma saved him.

You see, Mari saved her, and they kept in contact after that happened. So, when she heard about what was planned for her, Higan, and their son, Emma rushed over and found herself only able to rescue Higan and live up to her promise to Mari to make sure he would live.

This meant Emma putting him in a suspended state, one of her secret talents, which allowed him a second chance. However, this is his only chance for revenge and potentially reforming the Ninja Clan. But, with hearing about his wife and Emma’s now sacrifice, this allows Higan to sync with the Gusoku Gear, named Kamui fully, and it appears Lil’s weird self may finally meet his match in the next episode.

Other Noteworthy Information

  1. Mike is alive and was apparently in a coma for ten days, which implies it has been roughly ten days since the last episode.

Emma’s Ending Felt Meaningful

Death in gory productions can often feel meaningless unless the sacrifice means something. I’d submit that even though we didn’t get to know Emma well, she used Mari and her tragic death to help boost the foundation of the show: Higan’s revenge. For alongside Emma seemingly wanting to repay the woman who saved her, she wanted to reform the clan so that maybe the code allowed for love, retirement, or at the very least, operated on a case-by-case basis? If not, it would lead to people like Lil not becoming ninjas.

It’s hard to say the full extent of Emma’s goals since her life was cut short, but at the very least, her death didn’t feel like a cheap means to get you quickly invested in what’s going on.

Summary

“Ninja Kamui” finally presents us with a notable death, even if it did another fakeout with Mike, that may not bring us to the place it seems this show wants to be seen, but, at the very least, it does push the idea it can be more than random people getting bloodied and killed in a meaningless fashion.
