The Boy From Class – Shuu, Motoko, Kitahara
Shuu is the main focus of this episode, as he contends with his little sister, Motoko, having a crush on a boy in her class and wanting to study with him. From what it seems, Kitahara isn’t a bad kid. Yes, Motoko may not be doing herself any favors since it seems Kitahara likes someone else, who is unavailable, so making herself a viable option could lead to heartache. But that isn’t what Shuu is thinking. He is thinking about what could happen if his little sister, who likes this boy, is left alone.
So, with that in mind, he chaperones every single study session they have and ends up becoming Kitahara’s main interest in Motoko in the process. This is not desired, especially as this makes Motoko question herself and believe that everything that is happening is Shuu’s fault, especially for not getting a girlfriend by now.
This triggers some negative feelings in Shuu since it isn’t that he doesn’t want a girlfriend, but no one takes him seriously or appears to be interested in him. But, even with that said, he doesn’t want to complicate what Motoko has going on. But with Kitahara potentially going to his school, spotting him, and calling him senpai, now he is torn between trying to put up a barrier and being nice to the kid so he doesn’t look like a jerk amongst his friends – who are partly aware that Kitahara is Motoko’s crush.

Highlights
Other People Have Problems Too
Singular focus episodes are some of the best episodes of “Horimiya,” especially when focused on a character’s relationship, which, in the case of this episode, the focus was on Shuu’s relationship with his little sister—something which is cute but also complicated by Shuu wanting to take on the role of protector.
Though, you could also see this as, with Shuu not getting the ability to date, he is uncomfortable with his sister doing so. She is younger, and the way Shuu talks, doesn’t have much in the way of friends she can rely on. So if there is heartbreak or issues, she won’t have a support system beyond him, and who knows if she may even come to him regarding the issue.
