“Fiasco” Summary

Netflix’s comedy “Fiasco” shows the chaos and rapid destruction of a big-budget film. Created and written by Igor Gotesman and Pierre Niney, the French mockumentary captures the lunacy of a film set and what can go wrong will go wrong.

“Fiasco” first introduces us to Raphaël Valande (Pierre Niney), a first-time director making his big-budget debut with a film that pays tribute to his grandmother. Unfortunately for Raphael, his eagerness to please all parties involved in his film production creates constant clashes and misunderstandings that snowball into disasters on set. Raphael is immediately plagued with problems on his first day when he gives a horrible speech to his crew, which is recorded and threatened to be released by an anonymous source. His often clueless producer, Jean-Marc (Pascal Demolon), and aggressive assistant director, Magalie (Geraldine Nakache), team up to help him find solutions. But Raphael’s obsession with his actor Ingrid (Leslie Medina), his delusional friend Tom (Francois Civil), and his own naivety threaten new problems on set each day.

Raphael Valande

fiasco 1

Played by: Pierre Niney

Description: Raphael is the writer and director of “A Woman of Resistance.” While he’s excited to prove himself worthy to his grandma and tell her story through film, Raphael is overwhelmed by the number of responsibilities and choices he has to make as a director. His need to look good in front of everyone (especially Ingrid) leaves him in a worse situation than before.

  • Introduced in: 1.1, “You’re the Boss”
  • The actor is also known for their role in “Yves Saint Laurent,” their role in “Black Box,” and their role in “Frantz.”

Additional Information

  • Pierre Niney also co-wrote “Fiasco.”

Ingrid

fiasco 7

Played by: Leslie Medina

Description: Ingrid is the lead actor in “A Woman of Resistance.” While she is graceful and patient with Raphael, her kindness is tested when the director repeatedly fails to keep the promises he makes. Ingrid will do anything to get her best performance, even acting as Raphael’s grandma.

  • Introduced in: 1.1, “You’re the Boss”
  • The actor is also known for their role in “Balthazar.”

Jean-Marc

fiasco 5

Played by: Pascal Demolon

Description: Jean-Marc is the washed-up producer attached to “A Woman of Resistance.” While charming and optimistic, Jean-Marc can be clueless and stubborn about his ignorance in the modern media age. More gullible than the others, Jean-Marc also believes in the movie and is willing to personally invest in it.

  • Introduced in: 1.1, “You’re the Boss”
  • The actor is also known for their roles in “Dobermann” and “Dumas.”

Magalie

fiasco 6

Played by: Geraldine Nakache

Description: Magalie is the assistant director on “A Woman of Resistance.” As Raphael’s right-hand person and advisor, Magalie is more assertive and aggressive than Raphael, willing to make the difficult choices that he isn’t. She also has a crush on the documentarian.

  • Introduced in: 1.1, “You’re the Boss”

Additional Information

  • Geraldine Nakache has experience as a director and assistant director as well.

Tom

fiasco 3

Played by: Francois Civil

Description: Tom is Raphael’s childhood friend. Although the two may have made movies together in the past, Tom is an amateur actor who’s desperate for a role in Raphael’s first big-budget movie. Tom is so desperate that he jumps at the chance to play a fake financier and trick other people on the crew.

  • Introduced in: 1.1, “You’re the Boss”
  • The actor is also known for their roles in “Bac Nord,” “Rise,” and “Five.”

Additional Information

  • Actor Francois Civil has worked with the filmmakers before.
