A Hero Reborn: Naofumi, Myne, Itsuki, Ren, King Melromarc, Raphtalia

As Motoyasu is given 4000 silver coins, and 3800 to Itsuki and Ren, King Melromarc tries to give Naofumi just 500. Which was fine, at first, but then he tries to rescind it because of the slave fiasco. This doesn’t sit well with Itsuki and Ren for between knowing Myne cheated during the duel and noting how Naofumi helped Lute village, they advocate for him. Mind you, not to the point of making how much they make, but at least his minimum.

This is done, with an attitude, and then King Melromarc pushes Naofumi to leave, and Raphtalia is the main thing keeping him from popping off. But, while the King doesn’t appreciate Naofumi, it seems word of what he did in Lute has finally hit the capital, and he is winning over the people. From the herbalist to a witch, they all give, freely, things to Naofumi to say thanks. This, as you can imagine, after being a social pariah for weeks, if not months, overwhelms Naofumi quite a bit.

Rather than get a tattoo, Raphtalia decides she wants to officially become Naofumi’s slave again, so that leads to a trip to visit Dorei-shou. Someone who is peddling eggs for Filolial, Chocobo like animals, or ostrich-esque animals, which are used to haul carts. At 100 silver, while not cheap, Naofumi buys one since the selling price can be quite high once it is grown. Though, considering how Filo imprints on Naofumi, likely as Raphtalia, Naofumi would have a hard time selling Filo no matter how much they’re worth.

As His Legend Grows, So Does His Party: Myne, Motoyasu, Filo, Naofumi, Raphtalia

With Lute village being the source of what is causing the royal opinion of Naofumi to seem false, Myne marches in and proclaims Motoyasu the new lord and put a 50 silver entry and exit tax. Mind you, Lute isn’t a fancy village with a major import/ export economy. Also, they are rebuilding. So, when Naofumi hears of this, he speaks out and, of course, Myne tries to use her power and sway to banish him.

The problem is with that idea, there seems to be another kingdom, an industrial nation, which has spies which keeps tabs on King Melromarc’s kingdom – as well as the guardians. Now, while said kingdom doesn’t want war, they also don’t want to allow Myne and her father to bully local villages either. So, using the power they have, they force a race between Motoyasu and Naofumi. A race that, of course, Myne sets up to be in Motoyasu’s favor with multiple spells cast. All of which barely holds Filo back because she is a beast. Leading to accusations of cheating, especially since Filo evolves, but the secret army of the industrial kingdom note they were onto Myne and kill any claims she makes.

Thus leaving Naofumi’s legend to grow and with him asking for a cart over a cash reward, it only increases the people’s love for him. Especially since they are rebuilding and he acknowledges he doesn’t want money to impede their efforts. So, the current lord gives him a traders pass, which will allow Naofumi to not rely on the king for money, but that’s not all!

The following morning, after resting to ease Raphtalia getting motion sickness, Filo evolves once more. This time she has revealed herself to be an angelic like girl. Thus leaving Naofumi with two young women as subordinates and the need to hope Raphtalia, who is beginning to have feelings for Naofumi, doesn’t get jealous.

Miscellaneous Commentary

What Is Going On With Motoyasu?

Motoyasu being a jerk.

So should we consider Motoyasu a lost cause at this point? Myne clearly has her hooks into him and, as noted in a previous episode, is positioning him to become king perhaps. If not use his looks and reputation as a hero to try to push whatever agenda she and her father have. Most of which, I’d bet you, previous to the waves, were grossly unpopular.

Other Noteworthy Facts & Moments

  • Raphtalia is level 24 at this point, Naofumi is level 21, and Filo level 12.

Question(s) Left Unanswered

  1. Will we ever learn the backstory of the heroes?
  2. Who runs the industrial kingdom? Their queen looks like they could be Myne’s mother and while that would explain where she is, that doesn’t explain why she lives a separate life. Also, what are the names of her spies/ secret army?

Highlights

Raphtalia and Naofumi

The core relationship of this story continues to amaze me. While The Rise of the Shield Hero isn’t a drama, or the most emotional experience, many times you can get caught off guard because of these two. Be it Raphtalia calming down Naofumi when he gets riled up with the king, or watching Naofumi be so sweet and tender when Raphtalia gets motion sickness. Throughout the episode, it is hard not to be touched by the relationship these two have built and how, unlike many shows of this ilk, the relationship isn’t soiled by ecchi, ridiculous comedic moments, and the man things seen in How Not To Summon a Demon Lord.

Low Point

Myne

At this point, we need a motive within the next two to three episodes. Myne being like this just because is growing tiresome and with Motoyasu being a willing pawn, it pushes the need to see behind the scenes.

  1. Myne is just a low point in general. Honestly, she’s a horrible character. Fortunately Naofumi and Raphtalia are doing a great job of holding up their side of the story.
