Will The Real Miki Please Stand Up: Miko, Mayuto

Devilman Crybaby Season 1 Episode 4 Come, Akira - Mika

Okay, get this, despite Miko, real first name Miki, being in the school likely before new Miki, she is the one whose name got changed. Isn’t that something? No wonder she dislikes that girl so much. However, with Mayuto serenading her (in my opinion, he went on some intelligible rant), she has a bit of her confidence back. Though, not so much to train harder but instead visit a Sabbath party to get some kind of performance boost.

It Was All A Dream: Miki, Akira, Ryo

Ultimately, Ryo allows Miki to live. If only because she doesn’t remember anything past the feeling of drowning in a tub and this vibe Akira saved her. But, don’t get it twisted, if she comes to recollect anything beyond that – she’s dead.

Dear Mama: Ryo, Akira

Devilman Crybaby Season 1 Episode 4 Come, Akira - Demon

Unfortunately for Akira, his seldom-seen parents, Kaori and Reijiro, highly sought doctors in their unnamed field, who mostly show affection by sending Akira shoes, die. A demon seemingly got a hold of his father, basically ate his mom, and all that is left is for Akira to kill the demon and them in the process. Since, at that point, unlike with Miki, there was no saving them. Thus leaving Akira, effectively, an orphan. Also, pushing him one step closer to the dark side.

Other Noteworthy Facts & Moments

  • Akira only heard his mom voice TWICE throughout junior high.

Question(s) Left Unanswered

  1. Considering how Akira kind of got flirtatious with Miki, when she was trying to confirm if her dream was real, you think he likes her?
  2. How much control does Akira have over his transformation? He was a humanoid demon this time, only transforming halfway, so did he really defeat (assumingly) Amon and gained nearly full access to his powers?

Highlights

The Path To The Dark Side

With so many people around Akira being put in danger or dying, I can only assume the end game here is his heart staying pure despite the trauma. I mean, what better way to be tempted by the dark side than demons killing your parents – your seldom seen parents. On top of that, seeing your mother’s face on their grotesque body has to be traumatizing.

So, with Ryo talking about he has plans for Akira, Silene and Kiam on the hunt for him, one tragedy after the next and him getting loads of blood on his hands, surely Amon will come about in his full form right? It’s only a matter of time before little, rude ass, Taro’s life is threatened and Akira can prove this laughable theory that you can fight off a demon, a mere human, and win.

Criticism

Mayuta’s… Whatever That Was

Devilman Crybaby - Mayuta
I really wish I couldn’t though…

When Miko started crying, I honestly wondered if it was because of pain. Because I don’t know what the point was that dude was trying to make but I wanted to fast forward through it so bad. And the only good reason for not doing so is I think I got the dude’s name. Even though, fingers crossed, he’ll be killed in the next episode so that we never get an encore performance.

  1. Mayuta’s rap is much better in the dub, as it takes on an almost slam poetry tone and execution, i suggest you check that out for some better context.
