Remember how lucky/prepared the families were in Bird Box & A Quiet Place? Imagine a family who wasn’t as fortunate going through a similar apocalypse.

The Silence Character Breakdown

Heroes

Ally

Deaf after a car accident three years ago, it is because of that accident, which seemingly killed her paternal grandparents, that her family learned sign language. A skill which helps once the Vesps arrive.

Glenn

Glenn (John Corbett) and Hugh leaving a work meeting.
Glenn (John Corbett) and Hugh

Hugh’s friend from high school, who saved him from being bullied, as an adult he is now Hugh’s partner in a construction business. He is also either former military or just a rustic man into guns, so he becomes a lifesaver when the apocalypse hits.

Lynn

Kelly (Miranda Otto) and Lynn (Kate Trotter) talking to each other, figuring out if they should leave or not.

A former nurse, who seems sickly, possibly with cancer, she is Kelly’s mother and also has a secret smoking habit.

Hugh

Hugh (Stanley Tucci)

Ally and Jude’s father, Kelly’s husband, he is one of the first in the family to discover the Vesps are blind and, if you move carefully, you can still move about.

Kelly

To be honest, Kelly doesn’t contribute much to this movie besides emotional support. At least until there is a fight with the Reverend and his people.

Jude

Kelly, Jude (Kyle Breitkopf), Ally, Lynn in the minivan.
Kelly, Jude (Kyle Breitkopf), Ally, Lynn

Like with Kelly, Jude, especially since he is 12, doesn’t contribute much until he is called on to fight The Reverend’s people.

Villains

The Reverend

The leader of the Hushed, a group which has seemingly cut their tongues off, The Reverend is a pseudo-religious figure, though more so cult leader. One which wishes to have Hugh’s family join them, especially Ally, since they assume she is fertile.

The Vesps

These evolved bats, with teeth like a rabid animal, are completely blind so they purely rely on sound. Not echo-location, but hearing movement or vocals, to hunt prey.

Locations

Eastern Coast of United States

Specifically, the film mentions the home of Ally’s family, Montclair, NJ, and then they head off into the wilderness – likely northern NJ or the part of New York that doesn’t get as much attention.
