Official Synopsis
A couple (Issa Rae & Kumail Nanjiani) experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery. As their journey to clear their names takes them from one extreme – and hilarious – circumstance to the next, they must figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.
Our Impression
As the line blurs between what should be considered a theatrical release compared to a streaming/VoD, so comes “The Lovebirds.” Which, to us, looks funny, in a slapstick way, and it should be interesting to see what the writers, who haven’t seemingly dabbled much in comedy, do with Nanjiana, who is about to blow up thanks to the “Eternals” movies, and Rae who is one of the flagbearers of HBO at the moment.
Though, I gotta admit, I do wonder what will come of this murder mystery. Trailers, nowadays, usually give away so much so for us to just see someone roll over a cyclist, multiple times, then see Rae and Nanjiana’s character somehow infiltrate a secret society, it leaves questions. So May 22nd can’t come soon enough!
