Sing “Yesterday” For Me: Season 1 Episode 12 “The Long Way” (Season Finale) – Recap/ Review with Spoilers

It’s a bit of an odd end for “Sing ‘Yesterday’ For Me,” as a few snap decisions happen that may not make the most sense.

Recap

Can’t Risk Losing One Thing To Gain Something I’m Unsure About – Rikuo, Shinako, Rou

Shinako has been iffy about dating Rikuo for a while. However, with her running after Rou and trying to gain his forgiveness, it becomes clear things can’t continue. For with the way Shinako explains herself, Rou is like family, and she doesn’t want to lose him to gain a relationship with Rikuo. Especially since she still seems to be in a mindset of not being ready to be intimate with him, or in general.

A Series Of Fortunate Events – Rikuo, Shinako, Rou, Haru

With Shinako breaking up with Rikuo to reconcile, once more, with an increasingly manipulative Rou, Rikuo ends up running to Haru. Why? Well, after experiencing a woman liking him and getting rejected, he doesn’t want to lose access to that feeling.

Well, to make Rikuo sound less like a douche, it seems he realized Haru’s affection not being as conditional and her knowing she likes him has finally become appealing. So things end with him confessing he loves her and them planning a date. Which, of course, Haru is ecstatic about.

On The Fence

A Rushed, But Happy Ending

Rikuo and Haru, as Haru kisses him.

Considering Haru took time off from work to heal her heart and her realizing she was essentially Rikuo’s second choice, and chosen just because he had a taste of affection, it’s weird how she jumped at the chance to date him. In a way, it makes her come off, I don’t want to say desperate, but it does push you to remember how young she is.

But I think our overall problem is that, with how slow and steady this show has been, the fact we got what felt like a bunch of snap decisions was jarring. Mind you, many were long-simmering, and you could tell Shinako was with Rikuo primarily to attempt to move on. However, Rou triggering her ending things, followed by Rikuo knowingly being selfish and traveling to Haru’s home to hope she still had feelings for him, it gives you pause.

Thus making for an odd ending for a show that seemingly took its time to explore every decision and regret.

Overall

Trajectory – Neutral

At this point, I’m glad “Sing ‘Yesterday’ For Me” has ended. It was becoming less and less an anticipated show to watch as its sluggish pace didn’t seem like it would lead to any payoff. And considering it ultimately didn’t, I feel both vindicated and disappointed at the same time.
