Episode 13: 10 Centimeter Field of Fire

In the season finale, we are left with more questions than answers. Especially when it comes to the fate of Yuuji’s sister Kazuki.

Topic 1: Where In The World Is Kazuki Kazami? – Amane & Yuuji
Upon returning to the bus crash site, all Amane and Yuuji find is a note. One which has Kazuki ask Amane to watch over her little brother, but it leaves no idea if she is alive. All it says is everyone else died from illness and says nothing of her. Leaving us unable to say where Kazuki maybe.
Commentary
Though I get there is a sequel and prequel, to be released in March, I have to admit I am a tad bit upset the season didn’t at least end with some hint to her whereabouts. For while the people who were after Yuuji’s family could have forced her into hiding, or could have been the ones who killed her, something is better than nothing. Though, all things considered, there is also the third option: Kazuki ended up with an assassin just like Yuuji did.
Topic 2: Hostage Situation – Yuuji
Sakashita, the odd man from the last episode, and father to one of the girls who died, has seemingly finally found Amane and is quite resentful she is experience all he feels his daughter should have. So, to correct fate, he decides to make hostages of those at Mihama Academy in order to lure her there and kill her. Issue is, Yuuji, with the assistance of JB’s crew, as well as Sachi and Makina, have more than enough expertise to combat him [1]. Leading to, ultimately, him being defeated by a bullet which grazes his should long enough for Amane to take his shotgun [2].
Commentary
With this hostage situation, it seems now only Michiru isn’t fully aware of Yuuji’s capabilities. Though, arguably, I don’t think anyone but maybe Sakaki, and probably Makina, get the full extent of Yuuji’s work. For while Amane knows he isn’t a janitor anymore, and Sachi certainly knows he isn’t a regular guy, there, for me anyway, seems to still be a certain amount of mystery left.
Which, to me, makes it so that they probably know as much as we do. Like, we know Yuuji has a military background, and Makina knows of his old master, and Sakaki of his current boss, but to name the organization isn’t possible. Nor can we say what role they play in society.
Topic 3: On The Horizon
To show what is to come in The Labryrith of Grisaia and The Eden of Grisaia, we see two men, one with a rocket launcher, fight off the Japanese coast guard. Making it seem Yuuji’s time as a normal student may be coming to an end. At least for now.
Commentary
Naturally, the only real question here is: who are these two people we saw? For when I first saw them, I was badly hoping Kazuki would have popped up and we learned she became a terrorist or something. However, with no signs of her, and just two nameless men with military weapons, sadly all this portion can be considered is a tease. Not even a really good one at that.
Things To Note
[1] Sachi calls Yuuji and provides him a microphone in order to hear what goes on in the classroom, as well as for the girls to speak to him when Sakashita leaves the classroom. As for Makina’s role? Well, her training comes to use as she recognizes the Morse code Yuuji taught her to help enact his plan.
[2] Amane was on the brink of being raped by Sakashita, but luckily he had to go to the bathroom. So, thanks to Amane providing him water, and Makina making sure the last urinal in the boys bathroom was broken so Yuuji could get his shot, she was saved from rape and was able to save the girls as JB’s men moved in.
