Recap

You Know You Got Options – Randy, Hollywood, Ellis

With Sunday back in Atlanta and Ellis regretting trying to put her on ice or in the friend zone, he decides he is going to drive up to her and surprise her. But, on the way there, he heads to Aunt Vi’s Pies from “Queen Sugar,” and has a quick conversation with Hollywood. One that leads to an artist named Randy, heading to Nashville, to feel comfortable enough to strike up a conversation with Ellis and make it clear she finds him attractive.

However, Ellis is committed to being with Sunday, so while he takes Randy’s card, he makes it clear he is pursuing someone else. Though, as always, taking note of season 1, who is to say Randy may not come off the bench?

A Big Day For Us – Sunday, Toi, Mindu

It’s time for Sunday to have her segment filmed for Tanya Holland’s “Kitchen Table,” and she is nervous, even doubting herself. But, thanks to friends like Toi, and her right-hand Mindu, she has the type of community needed that makes it clear she got this. And when the cameras start filming, she is on a roll and is not only handling the kitchen at VFC (Vegetarian Food Collective) but also explaining things and doing well with customers.

You Here To Top Off My Day Or Spoil It? – Sunday, Ellis

Which is why Ellis showing up leads to mixed feelings. On the one hand, Sunday is happy to see him, but on the other, Sunday really doesn’t need more friends. As shown, whether they work for her or not, she has more than enough people to boost her up when down or party with her when she is up. But it seems that with potentially losing Sunday again, it has clicked in Ellis’ head that, whether it is his ex-wife or kids, it is time for him to be a little selfish and put himself first – worry about his own happiness.

And once he gets to complimenting Sunday, reassuring her he is serious and isn’t going to waste another chance, he wins her back, and the two end the episode having sex.

Things To Note

Question(s) Left Unanswered

  1. Where within the Queen Sugar timeline is this show?
  2. What was Sunday’s father’s original opinion of Ellis considering he wasn’t of the socio-economic status he and his daughter were in?
  3. Why didn’t Sunday go to private school if Sunday’s family had so much money?
  4. Will we ever meet Ellis’ family and friends outside his ex-wife and kids?

What Could Happen Next

  1. Ellis and Sunday exploring other options by episode 6 and ending up back together by episode 9
  2. Anastasia not taking Ellis moving on well or else asking a slew of questions
  3. Sunday’s other option not being a match because his ambitions go beyond the personal touch Sunday wants with her restaurants

Collected Quote(s)

Don’t you love it when someone can take something that’s accessible to everybody and just complicate it, in the best way.
— Randy

I need the front to treat ‘em right, the back to feed ‘em right and together we’re all gonna be all right.

Review

Highlights

Seeing Sunday In Her Element

The balance that “Cherish The Day” is giving is appreciated. It was made clear that Ellis is talented, whether working on MV’s house or handling the cottage he is rebuilding. So to show Sunday handling her kitchen, having a good rapport with her staff, and building a full life outside of Ellis, in Atlanta, follows up on what she said in episode 1. She truly built a reputation outside of that man and made it so she had no reason to look back.

Meeting The Option, That Will Allow Ellis Growth

We don’t really know Hosea, aka Mr. Morehouse, who will likely woo Sunday and be who Ellis gets compared to when he does something stupid. However, we do get to meet Randy who does do a few things Sunday doesn’t. With her being impressive to Ellis and her not just taking a compliment but noting how what he sees in her is just a reflection of his own greatness, that’s notable. She didn’t put him down or make him feel any type of way about his profession. Which, based on how he mentioned it to Randy, it seems he takes enough pride in to do the job but not the kind of pride in to gush about it.

Yet, within minutes, she got Ellis blushing, talking about his grandfather, and opening him up in a way that leads you to believe that Ellis might be more than willing to pursue, but getting reciprocity, a 50/50 kind of flirtation, that might not be the norm for him. And it seems he likes it and may want more.

Pia Noting How Sunday Inspires Her

Pia is Sunday’s hair braider, and we’re bringing her up in the highlights because often, when it comes to inspirations, mentors, things of that nature, the role is given to elders. People who are notably older but not in this case. Pia and Sunday are of similar age, and to make things really noteworthy, Pia doesn’t speak from a place of envy or jealousy. Also, their conversation isn’t about a man.

She is talking about Sunday having a successful and popping business. A eatery packed to the brim, based on what Sunday’s bartender says, on a regular basis. And having access to a person like that who you can talk to without feeling the need to apologize, for feeling like you are bothering them, is monumental. Add in Sunday could be an investor, spread the word, and provide the type of guidance that we all wish we had access to?

It further shows the beauty of the “Cherish The Day” formula in making sure you understand that this series wants to fully establish two independent people who want and make an effort to be together. It isn’t one who needs the other, but both who actively want each other because they are not lacking in options, are financially stable and have a community that is fulfilling.
