Recap

Love Is Not Quantifiable, And Therefore Not Finite: Muriel, Caleb, Rachel, Marilla, Anne, Ka’Kwet, Winifred, Gilbert, Sebastian, Matthew

Caleb (Kevin Forster) meeting Muriel Stacy.
Caleb (Kevin Forster)

With Anne seeing Ka’kwet off, before she is tortured in a religious school, and renamed Hannah, she finds herself in Marilla’s good graces. However, due to Rachel seeing her speak to Ka’kwet and her family, in their tongue at that, she ends up snitching, and it blows up Anne’s plans. In fact, Marilla shuts down the idea of Anne continuing to search for her family.

In doing so, Anne thinks Marilla doesn’t love her and cries in the barn. Leading to Matthew checking on her and when she says leaving and not coming back, that man rushes to see his sister, blowing off Rachel in the process, and puts his foot down. I’m talking, disregarding what Marilla said, what Anne might have done, and the criticism of how he is being manipulated. All he knows is Anne said something about leaving and not coming back, and that was all he needed to hear to tell Marilla to take it down a notch.

Yet, can you blame her for her feelings? Setting aside the lying, like Matthew, Anne coming to Green Gables has been a beacon of light in a rather foggy life. So the idea that keeps being put out there of her finding her biological family and maybe going with them, it scares her more than anything has for a long time.

Luckily, Muriel Stacy, who is dealing with Rachel trying to set her up, including with her son Caleb, catches Marilla as she is trying to juggle her feelings over Anne and taking care of Delphine. And in a mouth of babes situation, considering their age difference, Muriel reminds Marilla that Anne can love multiple people, and love, in general, isn’t finite – Anne’s especially.

Also, love, which will surely be on its way, isn’t limited to distance either. For with Mary’s death, Gilbert seems to be reconsidering medicine. It’s just between his mom, dad, now Mary, he feels that it is too reactionary and often when you are too late. Yet, while leaving his post with the good doctor, he doesn’t want Winifred to end her part in his story within that chapter. Something she agrees to and with her loving a train ride, we may see her visit soon enough.

Question(s) Left Unanswered
  1. How old is Winifred exactly?

Sometimes It Is Best To Lie Now And Apologize Later: Anne, Jerry, Diana

In the pursuit of happiness, or what simply fulfills her, Anne isn’t against lying. Diana takes this to heart, and as one of the people who help run the house goes on errands, she joins her. Leading to Diana eventually finding herself at Jerry’s house and coming up with an excuse, a hurt ankle, to stay for dinner, maybe even the night.

Now, of course, Diana’s parents snatch her up before the night is over, but between Jerry and his parents, the freedom, the dancing, singing, how they act at the table, she loves it. So much that as Anne sneaks off to see Ka’kwet, I bet you Diana may sneak off to join Jerry’s family again.

Question(s) Left Unanswered
  1. I thought Jerry was the youngest? Where his little sister come from? Also, didn’t he say he only had sisters? Am I mistaken?

Love Heals Better Than Time: Sebastian, Elijah, Anne, Marilla

Sebastian flying a kite.

After talking with Muriel, Marilla decides to make up for being abrasive by sewing “Anne of Green Gables” into a pillow. Also, when Anne returns from Halifax, where she learns her parents are dead, and she is apparently Scottish, Marilla advocates for a continued search into where she came from. Leading to whatever cuts or bruises happened before healing.

However, all wounds aren’t healed this episode. With Mary’s passing comes Sebastian, once again, trying to reach out to Elijah. But, with his callous nature, even with learning his mother died, all that happens is the two fight, Sebastian gets his ass whipped, and Sebastian decides he needs just to accept Elijah won’t be at Mary’s funeral and he will need to find joy again without him.

Question(s) Left Unanswered
  1. How old was that pastor to know Mary when she was 10?

Highlights

Matthew Putting His Foot Down With Marilla

Being that Marilla raised Matthew, and he is generally a quiet person, to see him be forceful and put his foot down, it continues to show you how deeply he feels for Anne. I mean, really think about it, Marilla is the only blood relation Matthew has left, and we don’t really see Jeannie much anymore. So for him to muster the ability to come at Marilla like that, that speaks to how deep his love is for Anne to pull rank or whatever he thought he had to make Marilla do what he wants.

Meeting So Many People’s Family Members

Between Muriel’s husband Jonah, Rachel’s son, and Jerry’s family, it was a surprise how many members of people’s families we met. Especially Jerry’s for while he has talked about them off and on, it seemed like we’d never meet them but would hear about them strictly. So to meet his mom, dad, and all his siblings, even see where they live, how they sleep, the joy they had, it’s heartwarming.

CHOO CHOO! Get On The Diana and Jerry Train

Especially if you ship Diana and Jerry for while Jerry’s family may not have money, they have love and the kind of freedom Diana is enchanted by. Pushing you to wonder, considering Diana isn’t above lying now, will she lie to spend more time with Jerry? Maybe to be around his family, if not him more? Also, what will Jerry say to Anne if he takes up all the time Anne usually would have with her darling Diana? Never mind the scandal if one of the adults, or other kids, catch them.

The Aftermath of Mary’s Death

Let’s put a lense on Elijah real quick. I know Mary’s death affected many, from Gilbert, Marilla, and especially Sebastian, but Elijah is something special. After all, that is her firstborn and you have to really think about the journey those two went on. From the shame placed on Mary, which trickled down to Elijah, then him seeing his mother, touted as this bright spirit by others, likely not the same around him. Loving, caring, sure, but the girl who was this big and bold personality? I don’t know if that was the Mary that Elijah experienced.

Which helps you understand why he was so mixed about being in her life. On the one hand, that is his mother, and he loves her, but that feeling of being a burden she feels obligated to love probably hurts. Especially since he probably feels like he derailed whatever she was destined for. Maybe a life outside the bog.

So while the show, unfortunately, didn’t detail what was in the letter, I bet you she refuted every last thing that boy questioned and said to him what could make him a changed man.

Marilla Breaking Down To Muriel

Muriel trying to reassure Marilla.
Muriel: Love is not quantifiable and therefore note finite.

When you really think about it, Marilla doesn’t really have an outlet. Rachel might be a friend from grade school, but she is a gossip, can be rather curt, about herself, and also isn’t the most open-minded of people. Her take on Ka’kwet and her people is this season’s showing of that. Which makes Muriel stepping in when Marilla was on the verge of a nervous breakdown such a treat.

Why? Well, like when Muriel had a moment with Matthew, it seemed like Marilla, too, realized she is dealing with a young woman who mirrors Anne. Perhaps seeing into her future and realizing what she could miss out on if she lives in fear. And for Muriel, let’s be real for a moment, she could use someone like Marilla and Matthew since Rachel, clearly, has the best intentions, but doesn’t have the ability to see people may not like her way about doing things. So having access to more quiet people, the only true progressives in the area really, might be a nice refuge to Muriel when she wishes to socialize.

And with that though, imagine her and Sebastian meeting and sharing grief. It needs to happen.

Anne Learning The Truth

Knowing Anne’s parents died, and she is Scottish, means that the show can setup us learning more about the Shirley family, but also moving on. Which isn’t to imply I was against this storyline, but Anne seems to always start off with some sort of mystery to begin these seasons that allows others to be showcased. A method I support, since Amybeth McNulty isn’t the only talented person on this show, but she is what sells the program.

Leading you to wonder, as things die down with her search for her family, what will she set her sights to?

The Unfortunate Things We’ll See Ka’kwet Go Through

Ka'kwet at a re-education school.

One option could be Ka’kwet and her situation, for just the taste of what we’re seeing in Ka’kwet’s re-education pushes you to wonder what Anne may, or could, do? After all, she is the one who convinced Ka’kwet, and her family, to send her off to school. So taking note of how her hair was cut, she was renamed, and how she is being tortured, this could be devasting. I mean, just imagine if Ka’kwet thinks Anne set her up.
