Episode 24: Thus They Fought
In an action packed episode, and season finale, which leaves room for more adventures, the focus is rescuing Princess Pina and setting back Zolzal in his quest for dominance.
Episode Summary (with Commentary)
Despite nearly every episode of this show being around 23 some odd minutes, honestly so little is said, yet so much done, this episode feels like it lasted only ten. For with most of the episode dedicated to Itami, and his original team, taking down Zolzal’s soldiers to rescue Princess Pina, and Emperor Mort, there isn’t much fat here. If anything, like episodes before it, it feels like a setup for something bigger. After all, by the episode’s end, not a single hand is laid on ZolZal, nor Tyuule, and all that happens is Emperor Mort gives Princess Pina his blessing to start a new government, hence leading to what can only be considered a civil war.
However, it should be noted there is no say of what the third sibling’s role is in all of this. Last we saw him, in episode 19, it seemed he’d rather bring in other nations and split the empire than play 2nd fiddle to Zolzal or anyone else. So if the series does continue, so comes the question of what role may Diabo play, as well as Rory’s sister, and how far the SDF may participate in this forthcoming war. After all, just to save Sugawara from the Jade Palace was like pulling teeth, and I’m sure the instability caused in the special region, politically, won’t be popular. So one can only wonder what the future may hold. Even in terms of the minor things like Bozes becoming pregnant and all the rest who have become matched up.
On The Fence
While there is a lot of action, with ZolZal not being disposed of, nor Diabo’s stance noted, we are given a weak finale which doesn’t seem like an exclamation point as much as it seemed like an ellipsis. For it almost makes it seem we are more so on episode 21 or 22, than the last one of the season and while it does setup a possible season 3 well, honestly it feels like a OVA is needed for a true season finale.
I really wish there was another season of GATE for the simple reason that I’d like them to actually bring the conflict to a conclusion. I know there are issues with the story, but I was enjoying it and it just kind of left me hanging and that kind of takes the rewatch fun out of it.
There needs to at least be a ova, if not a full movie. This was the first show I saw go past 12 episodes and I honestly could have been cool with it going on forever.
The first season kind of reminded me of Stargate and realisatically, I’d have happily sat through 10 seasons of this. It is just kind easy watching.
And, in retrospect, it strangely was able to balance all the genres it touched on. Yes, there was a bit of ecchi, but the sci-fi/ fantasy elements were on point. Also, it had these rather epic action scenes, especially with the Red Dragon. Not to forget quality character interaction, relationships, and growth.
I also loved the soundtrack at times. But yeah, the character interactions were what made the show really enjoyable. Even when the story didn’t quite word as well as it should the characters carried it for me.
