Overview/ Review (with Spoilers)

While the majority of the episode is very aggravating and ends with an unnecessary moment featuring some ecchi, there remains this cute budding relationship which is the show’s saving grace.

Topic 1: The Secrets You Keep (Fuuka and Yuu)

With it being revealed Yuu knows Koyuki, and didn’t say anything, Fuuka is mad he kept this from her. Which he tries to apologize for but with it coming out like he couldn’t trust her with this secret, it just makes her madder.

Commentary

I didn’t understand Fuuka being upset at all. It isn’t like Koyuki was a regular girl she got him with. Fuuka caught him with a big time superstar, someone he can’t just hang out with in a normal situation because then they would be mobbed, there would be questions of if Yuu was her boyfriend and etc. Yet, I feel like I have to remind myself this show features teens who haven’t fully developed their ability to communicate or to think critically.

But what kind of surprised me was that Fuuka didn’t freak out and ask how Yuu knew Koyuki at all. Much less didn’t freak out at the sight of her without security and being so accessible. Especially with the first two episodes so dedicated to her love for this girl.

Topic 2: Reconciliation and Future Plans (Fuuka and Yuu)

Thanks to Makoto, Fuuka, and Yuu reconcile and discover their sensei Tomomi, who got them the beach job, and Yassan, the guy who owns the beach house, are part of HEDGEHOG. Also, Tomomi has brought Hisa, their guitarist, and Nachi, who has been trying to get Fuuka on the track team, along. Leading to Nachi trying to coerce Fuuka onto the track team again despite Fuuka saying she wants to sing. So, as Nachi tries to dismay her and Yuu tries to support her, the members present of HEDGEHOG propose her showing what she got and it leads to a crowd coming and a positive reception.

Thus leading to people getting their instrument assignments. Yuu will be bass guitar, Fuuka lead vocals, and guitar, Makoto their keyboardist and Nachi, who used to drum for his brother, their drummer.

Commentary

Is it only me who finds it a bit irritating that this band that these two, and Koyuki, are so in love with happen to be their sensei at school, their boss over the summer, and strangely can move about anonymously? That’s really all I got to say for this topic for suspension of disbelief is hard for me and this seemed like coincidental nonsense.

Topic 3: Back Together Again (Yuu and Fuuka)

After making up, Fuuka and Yuu watch the stars together and share a cute moment. One which Fuuka is cold so she asks for half of Yuu’s jacket and they get snuggly. However, as he gets up he slips, her headphones fly through the air and his hand lands in such a way it is like he is lifting up her shirt. Of which there is nothing underneath.

Commentary

Was this necessary? There was no real ecchi moment the whole episode but we gotta end it with it looking like he is trying to cop a feel? Why did the writers feel like they have to include an “Accidently fall and now my hand is somewhere it don’t belong” type of moment?

Things to Note | Question(s) Left Unanswered

  1. So when are we going to learn why Fuuka is against having modern technology like a cell phone? I can get why she may not want an MP3 player and would prefer a CD, perhaps because of quality (?) but the lack of cell phone doesn’t make sense.

  1. That ending really was kind of unnecessary and really out of place given the rest of the episode. To me is kind of seems like Fuuka doesn’t have a phone because this show is bad at giving characters characteristics so ‘doesn’t have a phone’ is just one of her identifiers. Maybe they’ll do something more with it but so far every character has about three traits we’ve been told they have, we’ve seen them in maybe one or two scenes, and then they just kind of blend in with every other character until someone mentions that particular trait again. Okay, I’m being harsh on this show at the moment so I’ll stop.

    1. No, I totally agree but I don’t know if this show is going to be able to pull off a very bleh episode made up with a handful of cute moments again.

I think I’m coming to that point with this season where I really want to question, do I want to spend the next few months watching this?

      1. I’m definitely hearing that. Of the rom-coms I tried (Fuuka, Masamune, and Seiren) this was the ‘better’ of the three but it still hasn’t really managed to impress me and I don’t know how much longer I’ll sit through it.
