Recap

With Taiga in a hostage situation, led by a religious fanatic group known as “The Fatal Answer,” many are on edge, but not her father, Natsuki. From what it seems, he didn’t want a daughter, and most of the family don’t like the idea of Taiga potentially leading the family either. So, killing her and more than half a dozen hostages to keep a virus from becoming weaponized is no issue to them.

Chris as a kid

However, for Arisaka’s class? The frustration with SORD and the lack of a greenlight from Headmaster Ichiru Sengoku is immense. Chris, in fact, has already left on her own accord, damn any and all consequences, including the possible punishment of death. Terrorism took her mother’s life, and she’d be damned for it to take Taiga’s as well.

Luckily for her, nearly the entire class decides to risk their lives and try to save Taiga in the roughly four hours they have before the university gets bombed to get rid of the terrorist and also the virus that was being studied. However, as Chris discovers the hostages, Taiga, and engages with members of “The Fatal Answer,” there is a need to ask how she will rescue Taiga and get everyone out safely. Never mind do so without making herself a martyr?

Headmaster Ichiru Sengoku (Toa Yujinari)

Headmaster Sengoku is a member of the legendary Sengoku family, but not necessarily part of a branch with notable sway or powers over the direction of the family or its affairs. With that in mind, she primarily rules over the students of SORD – not with an iron fist, for she knows who these students are and what they are capable of, but her power remains that of someone many either fear or are aware of what she is capable of.

Natsuki (Kôichi Sôma)

Natsuki Sengoku (Kôichi Sôma)

Natsuki Sengoku is Taiga’s father and is ranked a bit higher than Headmaster Sengoku in the Sengoku family. However, despite his rank, he is not considered a strong contender to become the eventual head, as his daughter is, which does cause him to have some animosity towards her.

Review

Trajectory (78/100): Decline

Seeing Chris’ backstory and having flashbacks of past Grisaia franchise entries makes me wonder if we’ll see the same formula of the past be used for the franchise’s latest entry. The plus of this is getting to know each girl individually and learning what led them to be part of SORD. The problem, though, is, and sadly, Chris is a prime example; not everyone’s background story will hit just as it needs to.

When it comes to Chris, losing her mom is sad, and unfortunately, she never felt connected to her father. However, that doesn’t push the feeling of worrying about her potentially dying nor further her connection to Taiga in a way that could make you emotional.

Now, I will say that getting to see her in action was a treat, and the push that she could die or at least be in trouble does set the stakes at a decent level. However, there is some disconnect that is getting in the way that makes her potential sacrifice feel a bit moot, and it worries me whether future missions may have the same sense of urgency yet still lack the connection needed to see not only an urgency for the character but have a need to worry for the viewer.

Highlights

  • Switching things up and seeing Chris in action and the others soon to join her

On The Fence

  • Lack of an emotional connection undercuts the urgency and danger of the situation Chris is under
