Will has a long overdue conversation with Lou, as Phil and Jazz both prep for a fight over who owns the shop and the land it is on.
Storyline Recap
What Goes Unsaid – Will, Lou, Viola
One of the main cruxes of Will and Lou’s relationship is that it seemed Lou’s priorities were selfish. Viola has allowed this narrative for most of Will’s life but then Will has her and Lou in the same room and the truth is revealed. Life has been hard for Lou from his parents dying by the time he was Will’s age, to trying to make money to keep them from freezing to death.
It is because of him trying to make money, and not getting paid, that Lou ended up robbing that man and initially ruining his life. The man didn’t pay him, Viola told him to handle his business, and what should have been a ask and receive, became an ask and an assault.
With learning the truth, and Viola co-signing, it seems Will and Lou are finally able to move past their differences and while Viola isn’t trying to be friends with Lou, she isn’t against, once a year, or two, maybe being in his presence again.
A Last Chance – Jazz, Phil, Yolanda
To avoid additional bad PR, Phil offers to buy Jazz’s shop for it is needed for Omar’s development. Jazz contemplates this for a bit, but with Yolanda reminding him of the social significance of the shop, Jazz rejects the offer and seemingly will continue to fight for the shop’s existence.
You Never Know What People Are Going Through – Amira, Vivian, Carlton, Spencer
Amira is going through it. Spencer questioning if it is the right time for her and Carlton to be in a relationship leads to a blow up, which is followed by Carlton being challenged to prove he sees something long term here. So, with that in mind, he plans a family dinner Amira doesn’t show up for.
Thankfully, she does arrive eventually, and not too soon after her arrival she reveals it is the anniversary of her sister dying and it has been a rough few days. This story gets Vivian a bit emotional, since her own sister is visiting, so while I wouldn’t say Vivian approves of this relationship now, she might be a bit more lenient.
Goodbye Geoffrey – Roman, Geoffrey, Penelope
Geoffrey and Penelope see Roman face to face for the first time in more than a decade. He offers his apology for not being there for Penelope and Frederick ending up in the system, and reveals himself to be a broker for those Geoffrey is running from.
Originally, the proposal was either Geoffrey doing time or potentially Frederick’s life, but Geoffrey offers a bag of money as a counter and Roman is tasked to see if that will work, as he does owe Geoffrey for letting him down.

Highlights
Geoffrey’s Storyline Potentially Over – For Now
While Geoffrey’s storyline being a setup to see the original Geoffrey, Joseph Marcell, pull a Wayne Brady on “The Chappelle Show” had its perks, it was a very out of place storyline. Thankfully, the major part of it, with Geoffrey having to worry about his son’s, or his life, is over now. Which means, regarding Frederick and Penelope, the potential of them reconciling or maybe writing them off.
Lou and Will Reconciling As People And The Facts
A lot of the time, it isn’t just about what people have said but what was omitted. From what it seems, Viola omitted the full story of how Lou got in trouble and how his life spiraled a bit. Because of this, Will felt abandoned, unloved, and had created a mountain of feelings for his father to climb.
Yet, when Will had the privilege of having his parents together, he was able to reconcile the story he was likely told his whole life with his father’s truth, with his mother there. Thus clearing away all the hard feelings, disgust, and even paving the way for the two to bond in such a way certainly not seen as possible when the season started.
Amira Letting Us In
Amira has existed primarily as just Carlton’s girlfriend with very little, if any, development. With learning about her sister’s death, we got a peek behind the curtain. We got a sense of who she is outside of Carlton’s orbit and while information about her sister was minimal, even if she was involved with her developing an addiction, it was something. Add in her speaking Spanish to Spencer, and it felt like we’ve finally made progress in figuring out who she is.

The Gist
- Will, inspired by Phil and Vivian, has an overdue conversation with his parents, that heals his relationship with Lou.
- As this happens, Amira reveals what she is going through, on the anniversary of her sister’s death, and we meet the illustrious Roman, played by the original Geoffrey.
- He comes to convey terms for peace, of which Geoffrey doesn’t like their ultimatum so he offers a bag of money rather than his or Frederick’s person. We’ll see how that goes.
- Lastly, despite the potential to lose the shop due to taxes, Yolanda convinces Jazz to not sell the shop, meaning Phil may have to use the law to take it from him.
- With the pursuit of seeing people reconcile or be vulnerable, Lou and Will having a heart to heart, dispelling what Vy didn’t or did say, was a touching moment to watch.
- Add in Amira opening up, even just a little, and you get the kind of touching moments that sometimes I wish the show leaned towards more.
- But, while people came together, you know this Jazz situation is going to tear folks apart as Phil’s personal life clashes with the need to keep his firm from ever needing Erika again.
- And with Geoffrey’s personal storyline hopefully over, now he has no distractions to be the enforcer Phil needs.
