What drives "Insomniacs After School" is the lead's relationship. There is the type of reciprocity not often seen when the boy is the more socially awkward of the two.
Both provide a space where they don't feel the need to be anything but themselves, and it makes each reveal feel like a gift and worrisome because of how films like these often end.
But while the leads are layered and have a beautiful relationship, the supporting characters are inconsistently developed and leave questions unanswered.
Those who love seeing social outcasts bond with a social butterfly, and both go on a emotional journey to learn they aren't the burdens they think they are.
