Let’s Remember The Good Times: Emma, Norman, Ray, Isabella
With the only bridge out of the farms accessible through HQ, Norman is ready to tap out. There is no means of getting past the chasm between the cliff and the woods which lead to the outside world, so all hope is lost. Yet, this doesn’t mean he plans to leave sad, depressed and crying. He’ll remember Emma, when they were younger, making sure he didn’t feel alone when sick. Also, Ray coming up with the string and cup trick so they can talk when Isabella would kick them out. Heck, Emma’s persistence could have been what triggered Norman’s crush so with fond memories, he hugs them and preps to say goodbye.
Goodbye Old Friend: Norman, Emma, Isabella
As you can imagine, Emma has a bit of an issue letting Norman waltz to his death. So, she decides to cause a bit of a fuss which leads Norman to try to stop her and Isabella to warn her that she will kill her on the spot. Leading her to resign herself and watch as Norman exits her life.
But, unlike previous times we’ve seen people at the gate, the show doesn’t show a demon greet and perhaps eat Norman. He goes into a room, and that’s the last we see of him.
Just As Hope Seems Lost/ Bartering: Ray, Emma, Isabella
Ray and Emma are seemingly devastated and spend more than a month as shells of their former selves. This is a bit alarming, even to Isabella, leading her to offer Emma the opportunity to become a sister or mom – something she rejects. That, of course, offends Isabella since it seems she does have a bit of pity on Emma. Maybe since she remembers when she learned the truth and decided that at least being a mom meant survival. So her decision being rejected likely is taken personally.
However, unbeknownst to her, on the eve of Ray’s birthday and shipment date, it seems Emma and Ray might have a plan. One which may very well save the 37 kids left on the ranch.
Question(s) Left Unanswered
- When talking to Emma about becoming a mom there is a mention of having kids so, does this mean Isabella, or other women, are getting pregnant and producing these children? Considering the year, one could assume like there are farms to raise children, there could be machines which incubate them until they are ready to be shipped off. At least, that was my theory until Isabella noted the possibility of Emma having kids.

Highlights
A Reminder That Isabella Is Human – Sometimes
With Norman asking if she is happy, and that shocking her, and then her asking Emma if she wants to be a mom or sister, we see a flash of humanity in Isabella. Perhaps one of the few times it may ever be clear that most of what she does is for survival and, as she has said before, isn’t personal. Yet, with things never being personal means she is a bit disconnected from the kids. The only people who aren’t her bosses and in the case of Emma, Ray, and Norman, are anywhere near her equals or at least someone to talk to. Hence why that flash of humanity seems important for it reminds you that there is perhaps a bit of loneliness in the line of work Isabella does. Maybe even a touch of survivor’s guilt.
With So Much Despair Comes Hope
Assumingly, Norman is dead. We don’t see him eaten, but unless he joins the workforce, and his brain is spared, despite being made to sound like a delicacy, he is dead. Yet, with losing a major character and the episode ending with Emma and Ray having mischievous smiles, there is hope. Now, whether it is for naught is an entirely different topic, but with so few episodes left, something has to happen.
