Movies

Check It

There is this unfortunate need to compare films of marginalized people. Not to say one is better than the other, all the time, but because many are so used to just having that one shining star it is hard not to compare. With Kiki, I compared that to Paris is Burning and I feel the need to compare Check It to both. For if Paris is Burning was pessimistic, Kiki was optimistic, Check It brings us young queer people at that crossroad.

Spiderman: Homecoming

Sony, as Fox hopefully one day will do with the X-Men franchise, has given into the House of Mouse and let their property into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With that, we finally are given the Spiderman we deserve. Albeit one with the PG-13 humor of most Marvel movies, but this is a Spiderman for a new generation. One which, with the way things seemingly will be at the end of the current MCU, will represent the next multi-movie arc for Marvel.

To The Bone

To The Bones makes it so you officially can’t say Lily Collins is living off her father’s name anymore. For she proves herself as an actress just as capable of being a romantic lead as someone whose story can be emotionally heavy and heartbreaking.

Girl’s Trip

Without question, Girl’s Trip is the funniest movie I have ever seen PERIOD. All thanks to, not necessarily the established stars, per se, but Tiffany Haddish.

TV Shows

The Defiant Ones

After the still fairly recent NWA movie, Straight Outta Compton, you might think the world was done putting the spotlight on Dr. Dre. However, there is always more to a story than even a two and a half hour biopic can cover. Especially one you are sharing with 4 other men. For it was missing the man who helped Dr. Dre go from a seriously talented producer to the billionaire he is today: Jimmy Iovine.

This is the story of how two men with wavering similarities, became a powerhouse friendship.

Live Performances

Tank and the Bangas

They say all of a person’s experience builds off one another. Which, after seeing Tank and the Bangas, I believe is true. For over the last year I’ve been to a Rock concert, a Hip Hop/ Rap concert, and also one featuring one of the top artists in R&B. And I honestly feel, all the best parts of each artist I saw, I found all in this band which truly defies genres.

New Series Started

TV Shows

Netsuzou Trap: Season 1

Not since back when I invested time in YouTube series have I been this interested in a short. For while ecchi is what most people will see, there is also a kind of messed up story. One paired with a girl realizing she may have feelings for her best friend. Sort of like Faking It, but without the comedic elements – to a point.

Koi to Uso: Season 1

At first, Koi to Uso (Love and Lies) may seem like this season’s Scum’s Wish. However, as time goes on you realize on top of being a bit lighter of a show, it is also fairly inconsistent in quality. Yet, even with it sort of getting weak at this point (Episode 6), it has the possibility to rebound.

Rita: Season 1

Shows like this are why I continue to be a Netflix subscriber. For while Rita may not be an original property, Netflix uses its platform to expose you to some of the best non-English programming the world has to offer.

Currently, I’m trying to fit some time to do season reviews, similar to how The Carmichael Show was handled, and start fresh for the 4th season premiering August 21st. This is assuming I can find it online.

Knight’s & Magic: Season 1

What began as something which arguably could have become one of the top animes of the season has been living off of its exquisite mecha battle scenes. So while the first episode was labeled positive, this may slip into a mixed by the time the season finale hits. Check out what has happened thus far and tell me what you think.

Books

Surpassing Certainty: What My Twenties Taught Me (Chapter by Chapter)

In Janet Mock’s first book, Redefining Realness, there is a bit of a time jump from chapter 17, when she gets her reassignment surgery, to 2009. In that time period, we miss out on so much. Primarily the years of which Janet’s physical body matched who she mentally and emotionally is. The second round of formative years where a person strips a bit of what they’ve been taught and figure out what can be used to be the adult they want to be.

But, luckily, or maybe for the purpose of a 2nd book, Mock has come out with Surpassing Certainty. A book which seemingly will be dedicated to her 20s and give us everything between the early 00s to likely 2009. The year she met her now husband Aaron Tredwell.

Other Noteworthy Items

  • I had the opportunity, multiple times, to review indie productions after being approached by multiple directors.
  • Wherever I Look had its best numbers since April.
    • Which I have to contribute to Ozark. That Netflix account pays for itself.
  • Wherever I Look had also the most comments ever!
    • Albeit, it was a lot of criticism for Ozark, but I’ll take it.
    • Also, it was a lot of back and form commentary on Queen Sugar: Season 2 which I immensely enjoyed.
