Best Of

Belief is half of all healing.
— A Monster Calls

What does it feel like to be lonely? It feels like being hungry: like being hungry when everyone around you is readying for a feast. It feels shameful and alarming, and over time these feelings radiate outwards, making the lonely person increasingly isolated, increasingly estranged. It hurts, in the way that feelings do, and it has physical consequences that take place invisibly, inside the closed compartments of the body. It advances, is what I’m trying to say, cold as ice and clear as glass, enclosing and engulfing.

You don’t think I care about this country? I love this country, even though at times, it doesn’t love me back. For my whole life, my parents, my grandparents, me, for most black people, this system has never worked for us. But we still played ball, tried to do our best to live by the rules even though we knew they would never work out in our favor. Had to live in neighborhoods that you wouldn’t drive through, send our kids to schools with books so beat up you couldn’t read them, work jobs that you wouldn’t even consider in your nightmares. Black people wake up every day believing that our lives are gonna change, even though everything around us says it’s not. Truth be told, you ask most black people and they’ll tell you that no matter who won this election, they didn’t expect the hood to get better. But they still voted, because that’s what you’re supposed to do. You think I’m not sad that Hillary didn’t win? That I’m not terrified about what Trump’s about to do? I’m used to things not going my way. I’m sorry that you’re not and it’s blowing your mind, so excuse me if I get a little offended because I didn’t see all of this outrage when everything was happening to all of my people since we were stuffed on boats in chains.

We’re not all going to play the same role. There’s agitators, there’s advocates, and then there are implementors and we all have a certain role that we play.

That’s the difference between us and them. They have a modicum of talent, they shout it from the rooftops. Us? We have talent, we get told to shut up. ‘Don’t show off. Don’t be such a clever bastard.’ You’re special […]. Don’t ever, ever pretend that you’re not.

[…] loneliness […] agitates always in two directions, towards intimacy and away from threat.
— “Chapter 2: Wall of Glass.” The Lonely City – Page 19

I wanted to be seen, taken in and accepted, the way one is by a lover’s approving gaze. At the same time I felt dangerously exposed, wary of judgment, particularly in situations where being alone felt awkward or wrong, where I was surrounded by couples or groups.
— “Chapter 2: Wall of Glass.” The Lonely City – Page 19

It’s not that I fear being lonely, what I fear is a life without stimulation. I want someone to tickle my mind, challenge my thoughts and ways of thinking. I want something to tickle my presence with their silliness, they way of seeing the world and the best way they found to transverse it. Hell, I want someone to tickle my body with their fingertips, their whole hand, mouth, and being. Ain’t no fear in me about being lonely, I love myself enough to be good company, but ain’t nothing like someone recognizing you, seeing you, and willing to share their person with you willingly. Especially not to share their lonely, to simply pass the time, but to share their discoveries and allow open borders between you and their world.

You’re out there imagining your dick inside every woman, running around like a horny dog. That’s why you’re never calm. I never see men as penises. I see them in the street and I imagine what life would be with them. If it would be more exciting or fun or interesting and that’s what turns me on and then I think about having sex with them.
