I’d rather live comfortably, mentally in my mind than in misery being tortured with the thoughts and feelings of those surrounding me. For my body, I can change the position or placement of and can be repaired. But my mind, my mind will never forget and will never fully heal. It suppresses and tries to make the memory fade but the pain be it strong or faint will always be there.

I was always told when I was little that ‘No man can be an island’ and now I understand why. When you’re little, you’re untainted by others stepping foot on you and planting their baggage and waste. However, as time goes on you go from a undiscovered, pristine island into a garbage dump in the middle of the sea. So, essentially you’re not a island anymore.

As a writer, I feel this need to be open, vulnerable and expressive. Yet, as a person, I feel the need to be choosy with my words, only speak my complete truth to some, and even then be careful because there is the chance I could upset them for being politically incorrect or a bit too uncouth. It is a very weird combination.

Sometimes I do feel a bit down when I get an interview but not the position, but all things considered, I like to think of this scenario: Thousands of applicants applied to that job and they narrow it down to 12 or so. Just imagine how much arguing had to happen for you to be amongst that 12.

We all have some type of influence on each other’s life. Sometime it is short term where like a lightbulb someone says or does something which in a snap changes things, and then there are long term influences. Those people are the ones who do things for you which you never really appreciate while it is happening. And even if you do, you don’t in that moment understand the effect they have. Sometimes it is something small like listening to you when it seems like everyone just wants you to finish so they can talk; sometimes it is them helping you move when you were broke; giving you a place to stay when you nearly were homeless; or simply showing you the type of kindness you never thought you were deserving of, but have come to set as your standard. It is amazing what a person can do when they decide to be there, be it physically or in words. And I try my best on people’s birthday’s, though not every birthday, just to remind them what they mean to me and others. For while I will likely owe a debt to some of the major players in my life long pass when they transcend their bodies, at least I can say while they were here, healthy, and without it seeming like a last minute thing, they can know they truly matter. For sometimes in this world, as we go day to day, we can sometimes forget that. Especially when you’re young and think you haven’t done much. When in reality, sometimes you just being there, listening, helping someone laugh, it may not seem much to you, but it meant the world to someone else.

Sometimes I think it is better to have those moments in which you ask “Why the fuck did I do that?!” over pondering the many what ifs of the situation. For while you may regret acting on something, at least you got your answer. Albeit, said answer might of made you pensive to put yourself out there again, but someday you will appreciate you being bold. If just because it not only makes for a good story, but reminds you, when the (hypothetical) right one comes around, you are more than capable of speaking how you feel and dealing with the possibilities of rejection.

The beauty of getting sick is it disrupts your routine to the point of forcing you to slow down, if not stop, and take note of things in life. Making it so that rather than you being sick due to some germ or virus, it is because your body needs to cleanse itself in a way which unfortunately you aren’t doing voluntarily. So with every sneeze, cough, headache, mucus coming out of you, and the desire to sleep, your body is hoping you get the point that something in your life has to go, or change, for you to truly get better past the symptoms that it can inflict on you.

—  Amari Sali (Inspired by Peace From Broken Pieces)
